For those non-vegetarians who like exploring unique and authentic food styles, Huliyappa's Donne Biryani is a place one would like to try out. Located on CBI Road, this eatery will compel one to come back again and again.
"The recipe — a rural style of making the dish — comes from my great-grandfather's time. I wanted to get into the food business and that's when we got hold of this recipe. Some friends suggested we try it out in the market — and the idea clicked. We started this just for fun but now, the eatery sees a lot of customers daily," says Ravi, the owner.
When people think of biryani, a very greasy concoction of spice, flavour and different meats comes to mind. Proving the notion wrong, this style of biryani may be spicy, but has generous quantities of herbs and is not as oily as other varieties. "There are people who come back everyday for this unique style of biryani," says Ravi. The eatery may not have much place to sit, but the counter-tops with high stools are a fun experience for food-lovers. Filmi numbers fill the air, adding to the ambience of the place. The biryani looks especially tempting because it's served in a unique style —in a donne, or banana leaf bowl.
The place may have a very simple menu, but it makes up for this with the unique flavour that each dish has. The varieties of donne biryani, that range from Rs 50 to Rs 110, include Egg Donne Biryani, Chicken Donne Biryani, and Mutton Donne Biryani. The side dishes, that include chicken kebab, chilli chicken, chicken fry and chicken guntur, cost Rs 62 onwards.
"My favourite here is Chicken Donne Biryani and it's the uniqueness of the flavour that keeps bringing me back. The very thought that it is something regional makes it more tasty. Everyone thinks of authentic biryani as something Hyderabadi, but to have
something from Karnataka is different," says Sunil Kumar S, an IT professional.
