The student union of Mount Carmel College has drawn up an elaborate plan for the year ahead.
The newly-elected student union of Mount Carmel College has taken its job pretty seriously.
So what if they're still students? They are sure of what they want to do as members of the union and have chalked out a rather elaborate plan for the year ahead.
They hope to inspire their fellow students to not only excel in their academics but give equal importance to extracurricular activities as well.
The members confess that every decision is implemented with the consent of the management, who in turn stand by the students and guide them at every step.
The members of the union 2012-13 are: Gayathri Kunte as president, Jyotsna Sripada as vice president, Meghana Harinath as cultural secretary, Kulsum Ameen as assistant cultural secretary, Sonia Maria as general secretary and Varsha Sannuthi as
treasurer.
Metrolife interacts with the members of the student union and the management
to get an insight into the plans for the year.
Meghana Harinath says that hers is the most active post and she hopes to put it to good use.
"I intend to actively encourage students from different streams of education and
culture to think beyond academics.
The challenge is to get the students to delve into myriad activities that include community development programmes and educative seminars. I hope to rekindle the talent of students," Meghana says.
Sonia Maria thinks it's prestigious to be a part of the student union.
"I want to work towards taking the college to greater heights and work in tandem with my colleagues," says Maria.
The students chose different themes for campaigning purposes and Kulsum says she chose an owl as a symbol.
"I am always eager to learn and I want to practice like I am the worst and perform
like I am the best — this is the motto that I want to follow," says Kulsum and adds, "I
want to contribute my best in the year ahead."
Jyotsna doesn't feel any different and wants to provide as many opportunities to the students as possible.
"We hope to create a platform that will foster better communication among the students," she states.
As the president of the union, Gayathri Kunte thinks it is important to encourage dynamic growth in the college through effective leadership.
"I believe that leadership is nothing but setting examples and I hope to set the
right example. What students need is a broader, more practical avenue to learn,
contribute and accomplish as there is something beyond the classroom,"reasons Gayathri.
There are student welfare officers who guide and support the students in whatever they do.
Charmaine Jerome, a student welfare officer, points out, "The welfare team guides and assists the student union in organising and conducting all the cultural activities, in consultation with the principal, in keeping with the norms and guidelines of the Mount Carmel Management."
