People's EducationSociety's ambitious plans for the new year take shape in the form of a new course and a new building .
In 1988, People's Education Society, PES, set up its first engineering college in Bangalore, offering courses with a special focus on IT. PESIT offered the following branches of engineering:
*Mechanical Engineering
*Electronics and Communication Engineering
*Telecommunication Engineering
*Electrical and Electronics Engineering
*Information Science and Engineering
*Computer Science and Engineering
Over the years, the establishment has gradually gone on to garner many accolades, awards and merits for its academic excellence and non-academic activities. By 2012, PESIT was ranked 35 under the list of top engineering colleges in the country.
This year also marks the college's completion of 25 years in practice. With much to be proud of and commemorate, new year celebrations were brought in with the inauguration of an ambitious on-site project — the inception of the 'Silver Jubilee' building.
Not just that, with their confidence soaring high, founders of the college will now soon be adding another programme to the existing list of eminent courses. "With prior industry experience in the area of civil engineering and real estate, 2012 seems like the right time to kickstart a course in Civil Engineering," says Prof Jawahar D,CEO, People's Education Society.
"We began with IT-centric courses and have been lucky enough to enjoy the praise we've received for our work. Although we've always had the expertise and relevant industry-experience, there was not much demand from students.
But that's not the case anymore. Construction and civil work has undergone a sea change, with areas such as facility management, estate management, water/waste management, intelligent homes construction getting prominence over the other pillars of real estate. With this, we're hoping we're able to come full circle with our services," adds Prof Jawahar.
The new course
Having already designed the course and curriculum, all there is left to do is wait for the 120 seats to fill up and find a skilled team to train and mould all 120 of them in "real-time" construction. The first batch of students will be inducted into the college by September. The course has been designed as follows:
*First and second semester will lay the foundation to the course. Basic streams of Science, Physics, Math will be covered extensively, just like the other existing engineering courses
*Third semester will touch upon the core subjects of Mechanical Engineering
*Fourth, fifth and sixth semester will solely focus on Civil Engineering topics
*Seventh semester has been dedicated to learn more about the architectural aspect of Civil Engineering
And of course, the last semester, has been kept aside for project work. This will typically include work within the organisation, on existing construction projects that PES is involved with.
Currently, there are 40 full-fledged projects being taken care of on the 27-acre campus in Hosakerehalli, Bangalore.
Campus and other new ventures
The PESIT campus is no ordinary college space. Yes, there are the quintessential classrooms, laboratories and games centres and it definitely gives away a vibrant, thriving ambience but with the turn of 2012, the campus will be adding another significant structure that will be the centre of attraction — a building to mark PES's biggest milestone yet, its silver jubilee. Representing the grandiose nature of the establishment and its numerous accolades will be a building that "will be a showpiece of Bangalore City."
The design and architecture is being handled by a private firm in the city and will cover almost 4 lakh square feet area of learning space. "As a rough sketch," Prof Jawahar adds, "the new venture will host seven department rooms, six auditoriums, 400 faculty members, 3000 students, research laboratories, project rooms and 16 elevators!
"At PES, prepare to be constantly challenged, whether it is in the classroom or outside. You can look forward to being trained by stellar faculty, getting hands-on experience at leading organisations and building enduring bonds with your peers," adds Prof Jawahar.
