Camera fear is here

The introduction of cameras to keep a tab on illegally parked vehicles has been well received by Bangaloreans.

Many say that illegal parking has gone down in the City because of that.

However, there are also those who believe that the administration needs to be more vigilant regarding the matter.

"Illegal parking has reduced to a certain extent in the City, but more than that, two- wheeler and four-wheeler drivers now have the fear of being caught on camera. That definitely plays in the mind while parking," says Divyesh, a businessman.

There is a general feeling that it is easy to get away with illegal parking during peak hours.

Says Hetal, a software professional, "I have seen people getting away with it during rush hours. Often, the traffic police is managing traffic on one end of the road while at the other end, someone might be driving away from a no-parking zone."

"The problem is still there but people have definitely become more cautious," she adds.
Autorickshaw drivers point out that the number of vehicles parked illegally on the roads have reduced now.

"There is greater awareness among auto drivers now. With the introduction
of the camera, we are scared of being caught by cops,'' says Ashraf Huda, an autorickshaw driver.

"We had some problems getting to know the system initially but now we have come to terms with it. We try not getting caught by the police and the cameras," he adds.
Rishabh, an IT executive, says, "I feel introducing cameras is not the complete solution. Proper reviewing is needed to make the system more effective like in the case with most of our laws. More initiatives should be taken to make the vigil stronger," he
adds.

Ayush Bhat, who drives to work and back, says that such incidents are very
common in the night as well.

"I often spot vehicles being parked in no-parking zones in the night. People generally get away during the odd hours and this makes us break the law," he notes.

The traffic police, however, points out that they are quite vigilant, because of which the number of illegally parked vehicles have come down.

"There are no loopholes from our end and we have tried to tackle this problem in the best possible way. We keep a tab on all the vehicles that are parked in our respective areas and take immediate action if anyone breaks the law," sums up a traffic police officer on Hosur Road.
