Recently, music lovers in the City were treated to a live concert by popular singer Anup Jalota. his was part of a charity show, organised by the Shri Shirdi Sai Global Services Trust to raise funds for its various philanthropic activities in and around Bangalore.
"This concert was held for a noble cause. We wanted to raise funds to construct a school for the poor students in Agara village," expresses one of the organisers of the event.
Those who attended the programme say that they were not only happy to help the cause, but also enjoyed the great evening, filled with melodious bhajans by Anup Jalota.
The singer is usually known for his ghazals but this time around, he got in touch with his spiritual side and recited many bhajans.
He managed to pack a sense of humour into his performance, though, and ensured that it remained interactive by urging the audience to join in a few times.
He rendered the lyrics of Meera, Sant Surdas, Kabir and other traditional bhajans. He also played some popular Hindi numbers and cracked jokes in between the bhajans.
Govardhan, a member of the audience, says that this was the first time he was listening to Anup.
"Many of my friends have told me how talented he is and I must agree — he does touch a chord when he sings," adds Govardhan.
Anup began the concert with a Meera bhajan called Aisi Laagi Lagan and followed it up with other
bhajans like Bolo Ram, Kabhi Kabhi Bhagwan Ko, Jagme Sunder Hai Do Nam, Prabhuji Tum Chandan Hum Pani, Sham Teri Hasi, Rang De Chunariya, Ram Nam Ati Meetha Hai, Sai Baba Bolo and Jab Ham Paida Hoye Jag Hase. During the programme, Anup also shared many interesting titbits about himself. The audience's curiosity was piqued when he promised to reveal a secret to those gathered there. "Everyone asks the secret behind my lambi saas and today, I will reveal that it is my daily pranayama that gives me the energy," he adds.
Anup had rendered many of the bhajans previously. However, he admits that he tries to keep things different at each performance.
"Each time, I try to bring in a variation so that the audience members don't get bored," explains Anup. During the concert, his co-singer, Preeti Seth, sang Itni Shakti Hame Dena Data.
There was also a jugalbandi between Anup, the santoor player Rohan and tabla artiste Amit Chaubey, which was appreciated by all.
Anup says, "Bhajans are a way to find peace. Ihave performed at many concerts in Bangalore and each time, it has been a different experience."
