Magic on the red carpet

Tabu recently attended the Golden Globe Awards and looked every bit the elegant diva that she is. The actress, whose movie 'Life of Pi' rocked the box office last year, cast her spell on the red carpet in an Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla creation.

Her red sari, offset with a blouse in their trademark mirror work, was a winner through and through. "She carried it and herself to perfection, the way she always does," say the designer duo.

Working with a veteran

Anubhav Sinha's upcoming project, Gulabi Gang, has been the topic of discussion among the film fraternity for a while. And now, the latest news is that versatile actress Priyanka Bose — of the Italo Spinelli film Gangor fame — has been roped in to play an integral part in the Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla starrer.

Speaking about her role, Priyanka expresses, "This film was a manifestation of a kind for me. I have been thinking about how no one's making an all-women action film and here it was. It also breaks the stereotypical roles that have been offered to me lately, so I am super thrilled. It is a wonderful opportunity for me to share screen space with Madhuri Dixit, an actress of such high calibre."

Priyanka has a lot going for her right now. She proudly bagged the best actress award at a festival in New Jersey and a nomination for Gangor. Besides, she also has other films in her kitty — her next release is the Bengali film, Shunyo Anko, directed by the renowned Goutam Ghose. The film, which also stars Konkana Sen Sharma, is set to release on January 18.

Priyanka has also worked in several Bollywood films like Johnny Gaddar, where
she starred in a song called Dhoka opposite Neil Nitin Mukesh; Guzaarish, where she featured again in a song called Mil Gayi with Aishwarya Rai and LSD (Love Sex Aur Dhoka), where she played an opportunistic reality television editor.

Waiting for Shah Rukh!

Farah Khan turned a year older recently and had a rather interesting birthday wish. The choreographer-turned-director apparently wants Rohit Shetty to wrap up his upcoming film, Chennai Express, which stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead. Once he's done with this film, she can start hers — the reason being that Shah Rukh is a part of both their projects.

Shah Rukh has a distinct look in Farah's film and will apparently require some time to slip into his character. Because of this, he will be able to start working on it only after finishing his schedule for Chennai Express — hence Farah's birthday wishes. She says, "Shah Rukh needs a break of at least two to three weeks, post which he will start my film."

Negative portrayal of women

Of late, there has been a lot of talk about the portrayal of women in the film industry. With item songs depicting women in a bad light aplenty, one wonders whether directors and actors need to rethink the way they're going about ensuring commercial success. As Naseeruddin Shah states bluntly, "I'm afraid our population has become desensitised to rape because of cinema. In our movies, it is an act that is either foiled or avenged by the hero. So, I don't think people have a realistic view of this ghastly crime."

Referring to the recent gang rape in Delhi, he adds, "For the first time, the gruesome details of what transpired during the actual act of rape came out in the public domain. I think that caused the public outrage. And that's good. I just hope this outrage is sustained and doesn't become one more token protest."

A film with a message

Aditya Om, who has to his credit as many as 30 films in Telugu, is making his debut as a director in Hindi with Bandook. The film has Aditya himself playing the lead with Manisha Kelkar, the daughter of the late writer Ram Kelkar, as his heroine. "The title Bandook implies that the revolver is the passport to wield power.

I have set out to drive home the message that between picking a gun and pulling the trigger, there lies a civil world where the gun is the climbing ladder to success, power, women etc," says Aditya, who has succeeded in convincing minister Kapil Sibal to write the song Tu Jaldi Bata.

This has been composed by Nikhil Kamat and picturised by Aditya on Manisha Kelkar. Aditya says that he is happy that today, when no distributor is willing to trust a newcomer, the content of his film has ensured it gets good distribution. He is also happy that his film has fresh faces — including him — because he is of the opinion that today, a director will nosedive if he delivers a flop with a super star.

Fresh couple on screen

The first look of the upcoming romantic comedy, 'I Love New Year', which is directed by Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru, was recently released.

The audience will get to witness Sunny Deol in a never-seen-before avatar in this movie, which is releasing on April 26. A young, suave and stylish Sunny Deol is paired opposite the eccentric, elegant and classy Kangana Ranaut.

This new reel jodi will be seen romancing, smiling, dancing and looking their best in 'I Love New Year'. In this comedy of errors, Sunny and Kangana will give the audience a lot to laugh about. The film is produced by Bhushan Kumar and Krishan Kumar. Sunny and Kangana play characters who accidently meet on the eve of the New Year in the city of New York.
