Waiting for a fresh coat of paint

The City administration has finally taken the initiative to provide better roads to the citizens and many streets in the City are getting a facelift — they are being tarred and painted.

But some integral issues, like painting zebra crossings on the roads, have been ignored. Roads like Indiranagar 100 Feet Road and the streets leading to the Information Department have a fresh coat of tar, but no zebra crossing.

According to the rules, motorists have to stop before a zebra crossing when the signal turns red. But with no visible zebra crossings, motorists in these areas are confounded as to where they should stop. The same goes for pedestrians, who don't have a fixed stretch to cross the roads.

Motorists note that this is an issue which should be tackled immediately. "Earlier, the entire stretch of 100 Feet Road in Indiranagar was full of potholes and the condition was worse at the intersection between Old Madras Road and CMH Road. Now, the condition of the roads has improved, since the stretch was tarred.

But as motorists, we have a problem if the road has no zebra crossing — there is no discipline which is followed. Moreover, pedestrians cross over to the other side according to their own convenience," says Rushil, a motorist.

Others point out that those zebra crossings which do exist are often faded and practically invisible. Many are in need of a fresh coat of paint. "Many zebra crossings in the City are in a bad state.

They are hardly visible and this isn't safe for pedestrians, especially when the signal turns green. It is even more confusing at night. There is an immediate need to repaint these zebra crossings, as they are important for motorists as well as pedestrians," says Poonacha, a professional.

K T Nagaraj, super engineer (roads) of the BBMP, informs that the process of asphalting and tarring the roads has begun in several areas and after this, the zebra crossings will be repainted.

Subhash, a student who uses public transport frequently, says that it is necessary that the zebra crossings be painted afresh as it is a hassle for pedestrians. "The zebra crossings demarcate the point where motorists should stop and allow the pedestrians to cross over to the other side of the road.

But with the absence of a clear demarcation, motorists stop wherever they want to, causing inconvenience to pedestrians. Many big buses also stop in a haphazard manner, leading to a lot of chaos on the streets. I can see that many roads are being mended — but the City administration should think about painting the zebra crossings as well," he adds.

He also points out that in some streets, the zebra crossings are only painted on a small portion of the road. Bangaloreans feel that it's high time these problems are
tackled.
