The bond between a senior and junior student is always a special one. This was evident during the recent commerce fest, which the B Com students of Surana College hosted for their PUC counterparts.
Called 'Explore', the fest encouraged the students to get over their stage fear, bring out hidden talents and gave them a chance to work as a team. The fest also encouraged the students to mingle with each other, instead of sticking to their own circle of friends.
A S Chandramouli, the principal of the degree college, congratulated the students on the concept of the event. "Through 'Explore', you have to explore your talents," he said.
The two-day fest had a theme of different countries. Each event was associated with a country. For example, India was for 'sales task', China for 'product launch', US for 'quiz', Great Britain for 'model making', France for 'collage', Egypt for 'treasure hunt', Africa for 'dance' and Italy for 'fashion show'.
Through these events, the participants got an opportunity to become familiar with commerce-related topics as well as gain more knowledge about each of the countries.
The events were exciting and also saw good participation. The quiz, in fact, had 20 teams taking part and after a gruelling session, only the top four teams got to qualify for the finals. The 'sales task' was also an interesting competition, which was divided into two rounds. The first round saw the students convince the judges with their marketing skills and sales pitch.
After this came the 'Beg, Borrow and Steal' round, where the participants were given products, which they had to sell for the maximum possible price. Other events like 'product launch', 'model-making', 'collage' and 'treasure hunt' too added to the fest's fun-factor.
In the cultural section, the highlight were the dance and the fashion shows. In fact, the fashion show was also a platform to learn, for some of the PUC students.
"Through this show, they learnt how to manage to be glamourous, stylish and look cool with limited resources, what music to select for the ramp presentation, what different colours signify and also how to use fashion to convey a meaningful social message," explains Mini K Abraham, HOD of the commerce department.
The chief student coordinator, Anoop Porwal, a final-year B Com student who led the team of organisers, sums up, "It was a thrilling and an enlightening experience, which will always be cherished by us."
