There's no dearth of talent when it comes to the City's Kannada theatre scene. Most colleges have theatre groups which practise and perform some great plays over the course of the academic year, in addition to which there are also several professional and non-professional theatre groups, which include skilled actors and directors as well.

To provide these groups with a forum to showcase their talent, Jain University- Centre for Management Studies recently organised Abhinaya 2013 — a festival of short Kannada plays, which was held as part of its ongoing 'CMS Festival'.

A total of 30 plays were entered as part of the competition and out of these, eight qualified for the finals.
They staged their productions over a course of two days at the JSS Auditorium in Jayanagar.

The plays, which were staged included, Rabdi by Ranga Varthula, Kaalayatre by JSS Banashankari College, Shaalmala by Kanasu, Kranti Veera Sangoli by Shikshakara Kala Thanda, Male Niluva Varege by Sandesha, Kannadi Illada Ooralli by Ranga Sourabha, Sanje Hadu by Chandra Bimbha and Mayura by Shubham Karoti.

The crowd at the auditorium included students as well as older theatre enthusiasts — the numbers spoke clearly about the kind of audience there is for Kannada theatre, even today. The plays, which were staged over two days, covered a range of genres and most of them were well-rehearsed and presented. The stage witnessed a lot of talent in terms of acting; many of the performers impressed those who had gathered there with their spot-on reactions and dialogues. Many well-known theatre personalities and actors also came to watch the plays, including Makarand Deshpande and C R Simha.

Eventually, the prize for the best play went to Kaalayatre, while Rabdi came in a close second. Shashank Shinde, the leader of the team of Kaalayatre, was delighted that the team's effort was recognised, saying, "It's the first time we're taking part in a big theatre festival like this.

We're lucky to be this year's winning team. It motivates us to experiment with more subjects in the future." Prabhuraj, from the same team, won the title of best director.

Anand, who acted in Male Niluva Varege emerged as the best actor while Deepa, who played a part in Rabdi, was named best actress. The prize for best supporting role went to Pragati, for her performance in Kaalayatre and the award for the best set design went to Rajesh Babu, who had created the sets for Sanje Hadu.
