The 101th birth anniversary of noted artist K K Hebbar was celebrated in the City at a three-day art festival. Curated by Jija Harisingh and Yumna Harisingh Jawa, it exhibited various works of K K Hebbar along with a documentary on his life and also awarded a scholarship to a budding artist.

The festival not only exhibited some of the famous works of Hebbar, it also displayed the paintings of some artists who were influenced by him, along with the budding artists of the state. "It was Hebbar who put South Indian art on to the world canvas. He was very influenced by the impressionist style of painting from Europe and brought art from across the world to Karnataka. His realisation that art education in the state lacks proper infrastructure helped the artists in the state in the long run," says Jija Harisingh.
Along with the documentary, an interactive session on K K Hebbar and his work was organised and many budding as well as senior artists were present at the show. Hebbar's daughters, Rekha Rao and Rajni, were also present at the show.

The 'Art Mantram K K Hebbar' scholarship to art students was given to Vanitha from Karwar, who is currently studying at Shantiniketan. "I have put up some of my work and it is based on sleep. I feel a person is the purest when asleep. I have used cotton cloth and thread for my piece and all of them portray people sleeping in different postures. I was very intrigued by the colour white and its use in Shantiniketan and decided to use it," says Vanitha.

The documentary 'Pallette to Human Heart' was based on the life and journey of Hebbar and was showed on the second day of the festival. It was directed by Girish Kastawalli and Mani. The third day saw the presentation of awards to woman achievers in the field of art. "Hebbar's contribution towards art is gigantic; people began appreciating art from Karnataka because of him. He identified the loopholes in this field and also sent many students to Shantiniketan to pursue education in art. He introduced many programmes for the students," states Manu Baligar, a representative from Lalit Kala Academy.
