Colleges across the City are gearing up for the new academic year. In Jyoti Nivas College, a fresh batch of degree students assumed the office of the student union recently, amidst much excitement.

Fourteen students from different streams contested for five posts in the union. "College elections are a good exercise for students. They will have an idea about voting at a higher level. Apart from students, the principal and faculty also cast their votes to choose the union members," said Sitavi, one of the election committee members.

Any number of students can file their nominations for various posts in the union.
The election committee takes over from there and shortlists a few from the nomination list based on certain criteria like a minimum of 75 percent attendance and above, 60 percent score in every subject without backlog and good inter-personal relationships.
Even though colourful posters and students singing slogans were missing, the hustle and bustle of elections was quite evident in the campus.

The candidates had to campaign on their own in a disciplined manner. Over 2,000 students stood in long queues to vote for their favourite candidate.

Trishikha Kumari, a third-year BBM student, was elected president and Shruthi Arya, who is doing her BSc, was elected as the vice-president.

While Pooja Gupta won the post of the treasurer, Natya Machaiah became the cultural secretary and Shruthi Suvarna, the sports secretary.

Trishikha, who has been part of the student union from the year she joined college, is all set to take on more responsibilities as the president. "To be the president of the student union of Jyoti Nivas College is incredible," she exclaims. "I want to build a stronger network to bring about a change and push our college to greater heights."

Vice-president of the union, Shruthi Arya, said, "I want to bridge the gap between the administration and students. I also want to encourage all students to participate in college activities." Natya Machaiah said, as a cultural secretary, she wants to create teams so as to give everyone a fair chance to participate in the cultural activities.
The sports team of the college is always known to be enthusiastic. National-level ball badminton player, Shruthi Suvarna, promised to give all games equal importance being the sports secretary.

The crowd roared and cheered when the results were announced and were very impressed with the way the election was organised.
