Ready to tackle responsibilities

The students of St Anne's PU College recently indulged in a bit of time-honoured tradition — an investiture ceremony for the new students' council of the college.

This ceremony is a fairly important part of every college student's life, since the student council is actively involved in nearly every going-on of the campus. The council at St Anne's may not have been elected by the students — they were, instead, appointed by the faculty — but that didn't stop the students from voicing their support and cheering on their new leaders.

The members of the new council are T Sharanya Nair, Rashmi K Kesarkar, Deepika and Divya. The four girls were clearly delighted that they had been given a chance to prove themselves, and turned up at the investiture ceremony dressed in their best — traditional saris over which they proudly pinned their new badges, and simple jewellery. During the programme, the girls were given various responsibilities and congratulated on their achievements. It was clear that they were pumped up with energy and raring to tackle all the tasks assigned to them.

The other students put up a few dances for them, which were met with much applause. The first was a dance that was choreographed as an invocation, put up by a student called Anika. Her grace and perfect footwork set the perfect tone for the rest of the ceremony. While the first dance had a more traditional touch, the second one got the students tapping their feet. It was an animated Tamil number, which was performed by a group of second PUstudents. They seized the opportunity to shake a leg and have a good time — all in support of the new council.

Deepika, the new union president, appeared to be composed and filled with anticipation. She looked pretty in a cream-coloured Kerala sari and a red blouse and seemed confident and sure of herself. Divya, who was appointed as the president of the cultural club, was visibly excited and spirited. Although she admitted that she did have an inkling that the post would come to her — since she'd always coveted it — she was still pleasantly surprised and thrilled that her dreams had transformed into a reality.

"The teachers nominated me to this post and I can't be happier," she smiles, adding, "I was sort of expecting this, since I had always wanted to be the president of the cultural club. It's a great experience because as a member of the cultural club, I will get to go to different colleges, participate in many activities and have a lot of fun!"

She adds, "The name of the cultural club is Manthan and we encourage students to take an active part in all cultural activities, like dance, singing, vegetable-carving, flower arrangement, nail art, face-painting, collage and fashion shows. The best participants are chosen for inter-collegiate competitions."

Dorthy Sharma, the outgoing secretary of the student union council, also took the stage for a nostalgic stint, in which she bid adieu to her post. The outgoing presidents of the various clubs read out reports regarding their respective achievements during the year.
