Cultural mix
The birth centenary celebrations of bharatanatyam guru U S Krishna Rao in the City, called Maha-Maya, are being held in the City. The events on January 5 will begin at 10.30 am with a seminar at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Among other programmes, a documentary film 'Smt and Prof U S Krishna Rao' by H N Suresh will be screened. The cultural events will begin at 6 pm at Ravindra Kalakshetra with bharatanatyam by the students of Department of Performing Arts, Bangalore University. Prabal Gupta's kathakali recital (6.30 pm), bharatanatyam by Hema Panchamukhi and group and Sukruthi Natyalalaya (7.30 pm) will also be presented. The last event of the day will be a kathak recital by Nirupama and Rajendra, Abhinava Dance Company (8 pm).
On January 6, 10.30 am, at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, there will be the screening of the last documentation done on U S Krishna Rao.
The cultural programmes will begin at Ravindra Kalakshetra with a bharatanatyam recital by
the disciples of Radha Sridhar (6 pm), Venkatesha Natya Mandir. Bharatanatyam recitals will also be showcased by Prathibha Prahalad (6.30 pm), Asha Gopal and Revathi Satyu (7.30 pm). Sharmila Mukherjee and team, Sanjali Centre for Odissi Dance, will present odissi at 8 pm.
'Four Seasons...'
A collection of oil paintings, entitled 'Four Seasons in a Haveli', by Meena Das Narayan will be on display at Movenpick Hotel and Spa at 115, Gokula Extension, near BEL Circle, Jalahalli on January 5 and 6.
This event will start with a kathak dance recital by renowned artistes Hari
and Chethana at 3 pm on January 5.
Flute feast
A Carnatic classical flute concert will be presented by Ravi Kiran on January 5, 5.30 pm at SNEA Bhavan (JTO Hall), 13th Main, 20th Cross, Sahakarnagar. He will be accompanied by H S Sudhindra (mridangam) and Phanidra Bhaskara (ghatam).
Bharatanatyam
A bharatanatyam presentation by Kavya Kasinathan, a disciple of Mithun Shyam, will be held on January 5 from 1.15 pm as part of the Chiguru programme
at Nayana Auditorium, JC Road.
Vocal duet
Kalasourabha Foundation is organising a Carnatic classical vocal duet by 'Chintalapalli Brothers' Somashekhar and Rajashekhar on January 6, 10.30 am at Bhoomika, MEWS Hostel Building, 17th Cross, Malleswaram. They will be accompanied on the violin by R Karthik, on mridangam by T S Chandrashekhar and on khanjari by G S Nagaraj.
Nostalgic past
Gaata Rahe Mera Dil, a musical event will held on January 5, 6.30 pm at Chowdiah Hall. The theme is 'Romance in the Golden Era'. This show will take the audience back to songs of the 50s, 60s and 70s sung by Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle. The show will have songs rendered from movies such as Mere Sanam, Aradhana, 'Guide', Kati Patang, 'Love in Tokyo' etc.
The singers are Anil Bajpai, Sangeetha Melakar and Vinod Sheshadri from Mumbai, Nagachandrika Bhat from Bangalore and Nayan Shah from Calicut. They will be accompanied by the 'Evergreen Orchestra'. Play on
'California Suite', a play, will be staged at Alliance Francaise on January 6, 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm. It is being done by Playtonic Productions and Indianstage Performing Arts.
Triple treat
Mahamaya School of Performing Arts is presenting Mahamaya, a festival of Indian traditional dance, at Seva Sadan, 14th Cross, Malleswaram on January 5. The events will begin at 6 pm with Makkala Yakshagana by Yaksha Kala Academy; at 7 pm, bharatanatyam will be presented by Sathya Narayana Raju; and at 8 pm kuchipudi will be presented by Vyjayanthi Kashi.
'Nirantharam'
Sangeetha Sambhrama, an arts institution founded by P Ramaa, is holding a week-long music and dance festival called Nirantharam from January 6 at Seva Sadan, Malleswaram and Gayana Samaja, K R Road, Chamrajpet.
Thematic dances
Nrityanjali School of Bharatanatyam is organising a two-day classical dance festival at ADA Rangamandira on January 5 and 6, 6 pm onwards. On January 5, a unique thematic presentation Prema Prana Prahara - a joint collaboration of bharatanatyam, kathak and mohiniyattam presenting three powerful women - will be showcased. Poornima Ashok, in bharatanatyam style, will portray Sita-Prema in the Sita Kalyanam episode. Smitha in kathak style, will portray Radha-Prana or Radha's unconditional love for Krishna; and Gopika Verma, through mohiniyattam, will portray Draupadi Prahara. On January 6, Charles Ma will perform a solo bharatanatyam recital. There will also be a thematic group presentation Shakthi by disciples of L Narendra Kumar from Chennai.
Soothing strains
Nidhi Ravishankar, a disciple of Vidushi Shobha Kukke, will present a Carnatic classical music concert at the Indian Institute of World Culture, Shri B P Wadia Road, Basavangudi on January 5, 6 pm.
