As part of the 'Every Friday Cultural Programme', a bharatanatyam recital was presented by Tejasshri K R and Sindhu B S at Yavanika. The coordinated steps and powerful expressions of the dancers received much applause from the audience.

What was interesting was that the audience comprised people of all age groups. The duo began their recital with an inaugural dance, which was invoking Ganesha.

This was soon followed by a lengthy piece, which had interesting choreography and powerful expressions.

The jatiswaram was dynamic and the dancers matched their steps to the fast beats of the mridangam. The varnam which was set in adi talam was the centrepiece of the performance and showed various bhavas, that form an essential part of the dance recital. The long piece ended almost after a good half an hour.

This was soon followed by a javali, which was based on abhinaya. The hard work that the dancers had put in certainly came through in the performance.

Prerna, a young dancer who had come to see the show thoroughly enjoyed it. "I come here almost every Friday, there is lots to learn from both of them. Though they are young, they danced with a lot of poise and grace. The way they presented the entire show was also interesting as there were constant changes in the choreography. There were also occasions when one dancer had to make space for the other to take centre stage. The transition in such cases has to be smooth and they managed it very well," she says.

The accompanists on the violin, mridangam and vocals, supported the dancers aptly and added to the performance.

"It is great to see so many people turning up for the show to encourage these young dancers. The girls were very good, however, they have lots to learn and I am sure they will learn as they perform at various places in the City. The items were interesting. The pieces could have been a little short, that would have added variety to the show," asserts K V Raju, a member of the audience.
