Music transcends the limitations of age — this was proven recently when the International Children's Peace Council hosted a classical music programme at
Canara Union, in Malleswaram.

SindhuSindhu Hegde, a 12-year-old Hindustani singer, mesmerised the audience with her singing ability. Though she was a child, her voice had all the maturity of an adult.

Krittika, an audience member, says, "I have seen many Hindustani classical singers — not many have the voice quality and maturity that this child has displayed today. She was excellent. I am sure she will be one of the great singers of the future."

People were tapping their feet, following with the rhythm of music. Kalpana, another audience member, says, "What really surprised me about Sindhu is her musical precision in all the ragas. It takes a lot of practice to get the emphasis, accuracy and precision correct. Seldom have I seen people demonstrating this at such a young age. Apart from that, the singer has a good depth to her voice — it is very melodious. She will make a good playback singer."

The tabla and harmonium were played by Prathveesh Kumble, 12 years old, and Chirag Kanitkar, 19 years old respectively. Appreciating them, Sumana — another audience member — says, "The tabla and harmonium complemented the singer's strengths. It is hard to believe that they are so young." Geetha, Sindhu's music teacher, took pride in her student's success. She says, "Sindhu is a very sincere student. She attends all the classes, and everyday, without fail, she practises singing at home for about two hours.

As a music teacher, my prerogative is to mould the students to give good performances in public, rather than merely pass the classical singing examinations." The evening also had a musical recital by Dhananjay Hegde, a banker by profession. The singer was immensely versatile. From subtle and low pitches to very high ones, his voice modulation was perfect. The initial portion of his musical recital was very well-composed. It started off with only the singer's voice — later, the veena, harmonium, and tabla were added.

Sahana, a musician and an audience member, says, "Overall, today's show was a good one. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I particularly liked Dhananjay's ability to sing soothing, melodious, soft music — for quite a long time. Very few musicians are able to do that."
