If you are into health care and considering integration of music therapy in your work, or just intrigued by the impact of music and are curious to understand the basics and nuances of music therapy, here is an online programme that might interest you. The Chennai School of Music Therapy (CSMT) now offers a six-month online certificate course in music therapy.

What makes it a convenient choice for professionals and students alike is that this course happens to be a part-time programme with the online sessions conducted in the evening, between 8 pm to 10 pm. Each session would last two hours and two such sessions would be held every week, adding up to 100 hours in total. Students will have to come to the CSMT premises for a week for the practical and experiential sessions on therapeutic communication.

Austrian collaboration

CSMT is an institute that collaborates with the Austria-based IMC University of Applied Sciences and is known for its on-site post graduate diploma in music therapy and for its consulting services to set up music therapy programmes.

This online certificate course covers the basics of Indian and Western music therapy systems including principles, methods, and processes of these two divergent systems. The modules of the course include music foundations, music therapy foundation, music therapy traditions, music therapy applications, scope of music therapy, and therapeutic communication. "The online course would be of use to musicologists, musicians, psychologists, medical professionals, special educators, music educators, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, alternative and complementary therapists, and bachelor degree holders who have a passion for music and who want to integrate music in their work to enhance the quality of life of their or their client's lives," mentions Dr Sumathy Sundar, CSMT's founder director and a music therapist, herself. While certainly not a qualification to establish oneself as a professional music therapist, the course is directed towards integrating Indian music healing systems into contemporary music therapy practices, and acquainting the participants to communicate therapeutically through music and its elements.

Technical support

CSMT has tied up with the e-learning platform CISCO WEBEX for this online programme. From the students' perspective, the chief requirement of this programme includes access to a computer with broadband Internet connection, DVD-ROM drive, sound card and speakers. The hardware should have a capacity of 256 MB and 2 GB RAM. The participants must be able to use windows operating systems, MS-office, e-mail communication and online meeting software. Trained faculty will facilitate the learning during the virtual classroom sessions, and will also be available for student interactions. Academically speaking, applicants must have completed their bachelor's degree. However, prior knowledge in music is not mandatory.

The course fee is Rs 30,000. For further details, contact Dr Sumathy Sundar at 87544 24770 or CSMT's student advisor Dr Baishali Mukherjee at 9916744317. Interested persons may also check out the programme at www.chennaimusictherapy.org or email for information to info@chennaimusictherapy.org
