Hot idlis always serve as the perfect breakfast and are just right to kickstart the day. Sri Devi Tiffin Centre, located near Gangamma Temple in Ashoknagar, serves thatte idlis (idlis that are as big as a small plate), which are soft and tasty.

These are served with spicy chutney, which makes a great combination and satisfies one's taste buds.

Apart from idlis, the eatery also specialises in poori, Mangalore bajji, vada, and rice bath. The place is run by Gokul and Amitha Das. Thatte idlis have been very popular with the customers, especially children.

Prajwal, a 13-year-old, says, "I have been coming to this place for more than six years now. I love the idlis here as they are so yummy. In fact, I buy idlis from here every day. I prefer these idlis to what my mom cooks."

The Mangalore bajji is also hugely popular with customers. The bajjis are soft, sponge-like with grated chillies mixed and served with two varieties of chutney that just tastes heavenly.

The other customer favourites are poori, vada, and rice bath. The items are economically priced. Thatte idli and a plate of five Mangalore bajjis cost Rs 10 each. Rice bath is priced at Rs 20.

About maintaining the reasonable rates, Gokul says, "When I was a vegetable vendor, I used to find it very difficult to get good quality food at reasonable rates. All the restaurants in this area served middle-class people, there was nothing available for a driver or a plumber.

Because of this, I decided to open a restaurant, where the target customers are people from the lower middle class. However, I am glad that my restaurant is not confined to the lower middle class, many others too come in to have the delicious idlis. It is a testimony to the fact that quality never fails."

Vinay, a resident of Banashankari and an engineer, says, "I love the idli and rice bath here. I am a great foodie, and travel to many places just to eat. From experience, I can say that this place serves delicious idlis. Rice bath is also a must try. The quantity is good and very filling."

The couple do all the work themselves. They feel that hiring staff could jeopardise the quality of the food.

Amitha says, "Since the time we started this place, I have shopped for all the ingredients myself. Hygiene is of foremost importance. Even if the place is small, it is tidy. A customer should feel good about coming here." For details, call 9886291216.
