Though people believed that the clampdown on Palace Grounds would hamper the music scene in Bangalore, promoters have proved them wrong.
In the next three months, Bangalore is set to experience an explosion of international music acts spanning all genres — from heavy metal and classic rock to dubstep and beatboxing.
'The Great Indian Octoberfest' (TGIOF), which is taking place at Jayamahal Palace from October 13 to 15, is bringing down some really big names this year, including the headlining act — Finnish metal band 'Children of Bodom'. The festival will also see Tennessee band 'Gone In April' and American guitarist Greg Howe in action.
"As a promoter, it's our job to provide great music of different genres to the audience, while giving musicians a good platform to be heard. Associating with bands like 'Children of Bodom' and 'Gone In April' is like sweet nostalgia. It feels great to be making this happen," says Vilas G V, the founder of TGIOF.
As a part of the 'Rock 'N India' franchise, American thrash metal band 'Slayer' will be playing on October 20.
A week later, rock legend Carlos Santana will perform his debut concert in India on October 26 at Bhartiya City.
After his last India tour, eight years ago, Spanish heartthrob Enrique Iglesias is returning on a three-city tour and will perform here on October 21.
On October 28, UK's drum and bass sensation Dub Phizix will headline the 'Bass Camp' festival, which will also see British dubstep act 'Jazzsteppa' playing a DJ set.
Polish death-metal band 'Behemoth' and UK tech-metal act 'Cyanide Serenity' are headlining the 'Indian Music Conference 2012' on November 3 and 4. For the reggae/dancehall fans, Sean Paul will also be down to make his debut on November 4.
For the first time in India, one of the world's finest electronica and trance acts, 'Above and Beyond', will present a six-hour-long show in the City on November 10. Later that month, November 24 will see Swedish heavy-metal band 'Wolf' headline the 'Harley Rock Riders Season III' concert at Clark's Exotica.
In December, 'NH7 Weekender' will see its first Bangalore edition on 15 and 16, which will be headlined by American progressive metal band 'Periphery', English singer-songwriter Fink, British hip-hop and dubstep trio 'Foreign Beggars' and Austrian beatboxing group 'Bauchklang'.
"The philosophy of 'NH7 Weekender' has always been to bring down who we think are good live acts, with a cult following. It's not only about coming to watch the headliners but to enjoy the overall festival feeling," says Vijay Nair, the founder of 'Only Much Louder' (OML), who conceptualised the festival.
Clashing with the first day of the festival is the 'Indian Metal Festival' on December 15, which will be headlined by French progressive-metal band 'Gojira'.
The day-long event will be co-headlined by bands like 'Cerebral Bore', 'InnerGuilt', 'Flayed Disciple', 'Xerath' and 'Bloodshot Dawn', all metal bands from different parts of the world.
"It was a shocker to hear all the announcements at once. But it's a really good sign for the fans, the international acts and the local bands, who get to open for them," notes metal head Abijith N, vocalist of 'Escher's Knot'.
"Money is secondary. I'm going for at least 'Slayer' and 'Gojira', even if I have to beg, borrow, or steal," he sums up.
