Step into Alibaba Cafe & Restaurant and you will feel like you have entered a different world. With the tagline of 'An Arabian Lake in the Indian Ocean', food-lovers can tickle their taste buds with an array of Persian, Arabic and Bhatkali cuisine available here.
Started by Abul Lais in 2008, this eatery in Fraser Town has become a favourite among many Bangaloreans. "With an aim to serve different cuisines, my cousin Shaad Hassan and I started this restaurant.
As the name suggests, the theme of the restaurant is based on AliBaba and the Forty Thieves. We even have forty seats in the restaurant," informs Abul.
The dimly-lit restaurant with red walls has an Arabic decor. There are Moroccan pots, lamps and delicately-carved mirrors that catch one's attention.
The menu card is full of mutton, chicken and sea-food dishes. The restaurant also serves some of the finest kababs such as Koobideh Kabab Zafrani, Chenjeh Kabab, Bakhtiyari Kabab and Soltani, all cooked in Persian herbs.
However, the most popular item is Sukke Maas, a Bhatkali dish, which consists of chicken or mutton pieces marinated in a traditional red chilli paste and other spices. Another hit with the regulars is Joojeh Kabab, which is made of boneless chicken pieces marinated in saffron and fresh lemon juice. These are then charcoal-grilled and served.
Other delicacies here include Koobideh Kabab, a skewered mixture of minced meat with Persian herbs; Laham or Dijaj Kabsa, in which rice is cooked with mutton or chicken and delicately perfumed with Arabian spices.
Even vegetarians have a number of options here to satiate their appetite like Kadang Fry, which consists of sweet potato coated in chilli paste and shallow fried; Bhendi Fry and Bhendi Masala. One can also go for Gaavi Tarkari, which is a mixture of vegetables cooked in traditional spices and Dalicha, in which lentils are cooked in the traditional Bhatkali style. The place also serves Hummus with Pita Bread, which is a must-try.
Alibaba Cafe & Restaurant has chefs specialised in Persian, Arabic and Bhatkali cuisine. "Initially, we had a chef who was excellent in Persian cuisine. He trained the other cooks. For the Arabian cuisine, we have a chef who lived in the Middle-East for a while. And for Bhatkali cuisine, we have chefs form Bhatkal," explains Abul.
The restaurant is a favourite among people of all age groups. Mounica Rai, a regular visitor, finds the food here really tasty. "It is my favourite restaurant and the dish which I relish the most here is Sukke Maas. The Arabic ambience is pleasing too," she says.
