Hindustani strains
Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs and Nadanubhava will present Dasa Vaani by Hindustani classical vocalist Smita Bellur on August 11, 6 pm at Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs, Bull Temple Road, N R Colony. Entry is free.
Bharatanatyam
The ICCR is presenting a bharatanatyam recital by A Lakshman on August 11, 6.30 pm at Khincha Auditorium, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. This is being held under the 'Horizon Series'. Lakshman is an empanelled artiste of the ICCR.
Carnatic classical
The Bangalore Gayana Samaja is presenting Vaadya Vybhava 2012, a Carnatic classical instrumental extravaganza from August 11 to 15. The programme will begin at 6 pm on all days.
Rock on
Fling, an electronica ariste, will play at CounterCulture on August 12, 9 pm. Starting off as a simple fling with electronica, Karthik Basker's 'Fling' has evolved into an effortlessly enjoyable mix of electro-swing and jazz house, with elements of dance, big band, jazz and world music.
Tipu's life
'The Dreams of Tipu Sultan' will be staged at Jagriti, Whitefield on August 11, 8 pm and August 12, 3 pm and 6.30 pm. 'The Dreams of Tipu Sultan' examines the inner life of this warrior, political visionary, and dreamer; a fascinating look at 'The Tiger of Mysore' from a different perspective — that of Independent India.
For children
Bhumi, an organisation which works amongst orphaned and underprivileged children, is holding Nakshatra, an art, cultural, sports and science talent fest for children on August 12. More than 300 children will come under one roof at the New Horizon Educational Institution, Marathalli to exhibit their talents in over 17 cultural events and competitions. The launch of Vijay Nair's latest book, 'Let Her Rest Now', will be held on August 11, 6 pm at Reliance Time Out, Cunningham Road. Anita Nair will be launching the book, and Sukhita Iyer will read from the book.
Memorial concert
'Vainika Vidwan G N Subramanyam Memorial Concert' will be held at Ananya Sabhangana, 91/2, 4th Main, between 11th and 13th Cross, Malleswaram, on August 12, 6 pm. Vidwan Dakshinamurthy will be on veena, Bangalore R Ramanath on mridangam and N S Krishnaprasad on ghatam.
Exhibition
'Weaves India 2012', a silk and cotton exhibition-cum-sale, will be held at Chitrakala Parishat, Kumara Krupa Road, till August 12. The exhibition will showcase silk and cotton products made by artisans from across the country. Organised by Krishna Khadi Gramodhyog Sansthan, it will be held from 11 am to 8 pm.
Egyptian film
Egyptian Film, '678', directed by Mohamed Diab, will be screened at Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy on August 12, 10.30 am.
This will be followed by a panel discussion. The film is about three women and their struggles with sexual harassment.
The film took the top prize in the '2010 Dubai International Film Festival'.
The film-maker had to publicly deny that he had any intent to defame Egypt and assert that the issues are universal.
