Rainy days are here again. It is time to pay extra attention and take a little more care of your homes and your flooring this season. Gaurav Saraf, Joint Managing Director, Square Foot, provides the following tips:
To maintain the original quality of your floor for the longest period of time, it is necessary that one takes regular care and provide it the required attention. Cleaning laminate floors is very easy and requires minimum effort.
Laminate floors which are a cost-effective alternative to hardwood floors are not only easy to install but also require very less maintenance. The problems that we face with wooden flooring during the rainy season are swelling of wooden floors, cracks, scratches, dirt and dust.
Due to moisture in the atmosphere, wooden flooring tends to swell. One needs to ensure the wooden flooring is waxed properly and polished to protect it from moisture.
Take care of the basics
Most importantly, keep all windows closed overnight so that if there is a downpour, you don't have water entering through the window and damaging the floor. In case of water spillage onto the floor, wipe immediately. If water stays on the floor for more than four hours, it will start to damage your floor.
Maintenance
Firstly, though wooden floorings resistant to dust and stains are available, they are still prone to scratches thanks to dust trapped in the floor mats and foot brushes. Hence, it is necessary to keep vacuuming and mopping the floor as often as possible.
Secondly, one should not use harsh chemical detergents to remove stains.
The best way to keep the flooring clean is to make a cleansing agent at home by mixing half a cup of vinegar and a gallon of water, which helps in removing stains.
Rubber wheels and protector pads should be fixed in the furniture to help prevent scratches and any damage to the floor.
Always use dry mopping or damp mopping because extra water makes the flooring dull.
For waxing or polishing the laminate floor or wooden flooring, always consult with the manufacturer or the distributor. Clean the flooring following their recommendation.
Another important aspect is ventilation, which is very important for home care during the monsoon. Make sure there is enough cross ventilation during the day and fresh air coming in; otherwise humidity levels will cause a general feeling of dampness.
