Candy pop
English pop bands from Scandinavian countries have always been popular in India and other Asian countries. They include A-Ha, Aqua, ABBA, Ace of Base, Roxette and The Cardigans. Danish pop band Michael Learns to Rock (MLTR) has been particularly popular in India and Asia, due to their simple lyrics and melodious sing-along songs like I won't forget, Breaking my heart and Sleeping child.
With Scandinavia, their eighth studio album with 11 tracks, they continue to stick to their musical boundaries. The formula of the threesome — Jascha Richter, Mikkel Lentz and Kare Wanscher (the fourth member Soren Madsen has dropped out) — is simple. MLTR follows a basic verse-chorus format, with lyrics comprising straightforward and short phrases. Vocal harmonies also constitute a common feature of their songs.
The opening track, Renovate my life, although melodious, has simplistic lyrics. The second track, Any way you want it, was first played in Kathmandu in Nepal, when the band performed there in November 2011. In fact, the music video features different places of Kathmandu valley.
Space commander is no sci-fi song as the title indicates. It is a song in praise of a woman in command. Shanghaid in Tokyo is no song about woes of BPOs but about a search for love around the world. Crazy world is about a clever girl in a crazy world. Songs like Heaven is my alibi, Please forgive me, Hanging on, Make me feel and Icebreaker are all about different shades of love.
Scandinavia is about being on tour and away from home and what that really means. (We are gently flying in from Asia/ 'cause we belong in Scandinavia.)
