Art

'Satakala'

Pooja Surana is displaying her selective paintings in the corporate art show Satakala at SIBM, 95/1, 95/2, Electronics City Phase 1, Hosur Road on August 4, 3 pm. She has conducted mural and wood collage workshops in different parts of Karnataka. The artist has also specialised in acrylics and mixed-media colours, wood-based murals, miniature sculptures, copper and glass works etc.

Iconic works

NGMA is organising an exhibition 'Ramkinkar Baij — A Retrospective', curated by K S Radhakrishnan. Ramkinkar Baij was one among the seminal artists of modern India. He was not only an iconic sculptor but also a painter and graphic artist. The exhibition has more than 350 works from various important collections. The exhibition is on view at NGMA, Palace Road till August 14. The gallery is open from 10 am to 5 pm on all days except Mondays.

Expressions

'Confluence', the visual art exhibition by Sandhya K Sirsi showcasing the expressions of life, will be on at Tangerine, Indiranagar till August 12 . The exhibition is an interpretation in art from the experiences faced or observed by Sandhya.

Sandhya is a self-taught artist, who lives and works in Bangalore intrinsically learning and practising visual arts in various forms, types and mediums. Her paintings are based on the theme evolution, which is evident from her minimalist approach and portrayal of colours.

A milestone

An exhibition called 'Wishes' by Samir Mondal will be on display at Gallery Sumukha, near
BTS Bus Depot, Wilson Garden, till August 4, 10.30 am to 6 pm. The current series of works from Samir Mondal are created to mark the occasion of the artist completing 60 years.

'Writism'

An exhibition, 'Writism' by Thomas Abraham, will be on view on August 2 and 3 at Alliance Française.

Music

'Jugalbandi'

Sursagar and Alliance Française are coming together to present a sitar jugalbandi by Ustad Rafique Khan and Ustad Shafique Khan along with their disciple Ankush Nayak on August 4, 6.30 pm at Alliance Française.

'Young Performer...'

The Majolly Music Trust, in collaboration with Theme and Kawai Pianos, will present Mathilde Legrand (piano) and Jasiel Peter (violin) as part of their ongoing 'Young Performer Concert Series', which will showcase India's young musicians.
Supported by Rezonant Design Pvt Ltd, the concert will be held on August 5, 5.30 pm at Theme Piano World, Koramangala.

'Entharo ...'

Carnatic recital

On the occasion of 78th Avataramahotsav celebration of Jayendrasaraswati Swami of Kanchi Kamakotipeetam, on August 3, 6.30 pm, a Carnatic classical vocal music recital by Seetha Satyanarayana will be held. She will be accompanied by M S Govindaswamy on violin and M A Krishnamurthy on mridangam. The venue is Kanchikamakoti Mutt, 5th Main, Malleswaram.

Voice apart

Legendary radio anchor Ameen Sayani will anchor Geetmala Ke Amar Sangeetkar on August 15, 6 pm for Rotary's fundraiser in aid of 'Dialysis Machines Project' at Chowdiah Hall.

In his 80 years of eventful life, this is going to be his first show in Bangalore.

He will present to the audience nine composers, 30 songs and a special audio-visual presentation.

'Listening to...'

Bombay Jayashri will present a concert, 'Listening to Life - the Journey of a Raga', on August 2 at Brigade MLR Convention Centre in J P Nagar and on August 3 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

The concert will feature popular music from several genres and will start at 8 pm on both days.

M S Sathyu has designed the sets and lighting for the programme.

M D Pallavi will be singing a few Kannada songs aptly woven into the theme.

Embar Kannan will be on traditional and electric violin, Navin Iyer on flute, Navneeth Sundar on grand piano and harmonium, J Vaidyanathan on mridangam and Sai Shravanam on tabla.

Students' work

The sixth batch of students of Attakkalari's Diploma in Movement Arts and Mixed Media will have their graduation presentations on August 24, 7 pm at JSS Auditorium, Jayanagar. The evening will showcase the students' work. Also, the final auditions for the diploma batch of 2012-13 are in progress. 'Rhythm of...'

The International Music and Arts Society will present 'Rhythm of Life' by the 'Contemporary Dance Theatre' from Brigham University on August 2, 7.30 pm at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

It will be a visual and kinetic feast with dances that range in style from contemporary to hip-hop.

Drama

'Spamalot'

The Cause Foundation is presenting Monty Python's 'Spamalot' on August 4, 7.15 pm and August 5, 11 am. It is directed by Leila Alvares and features Priya Mendens, Jude Lazaro, Prem Koshy, Shyju Varkey, Mark Swaroop, Darius Tarapovala, and Arvind Kasthuri. The music director is Vivek Menzel.

The band comprises Robin Colaco (lead), Vikram Kiran (bass), Neville Bharucha (keyboards), Bethel Tsuzu (piano) and Vivek Menzel (percussion and drums). The dance directors are Lynn Lazaro, Alisha D'souza and John Fernandez. Sound and light are by Reynolds and costumes are by Asha Fernandes of Elan.

'Treadmill'

Indian Ensemble will present 'Treadmill', a play in Hindi, written by Sandeep Shikhar and directed by Abhishek Majumdar, on August 5, 3.30 pm and 7.30 pm at Ranga Shankara.

'Treadmill' is a journey of exploring personal memories of people in the towns of India. The cast has Sandeep Shikhar, Virginia Rodrigues and Ashwini Kumar Chakre.

'A Walk in...'

India Foundation for the Arts is presenting the Bangalore premiere of 'A Walk in the Woods' on August 17, 7.30 pm at Chowdiah Hall. It will feature Naseeruddin Shah and Rajit Kapoor.

The play is written by American playwright Lee Blessing and directed by Ratna Pathak Shah. It is produced by Motley.

Children's play

DreamScope Theatre is coming up with its first children's play 'The Forest', written and directed by Puja Goyal. The play is performed by children and is for children. Keeping in tune with the theme of the play, the stage of 'The Forest' is made of recycled and waste material and is eco-friendly.

The play will be staged on August 5, 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm at the JSS Auditorium.

Training session

The British Council is inviting UK alumni to participate in 'Communicating across Cultures', a three-hour, theatre-based training session which explores the dynamics between people and groups through the understanding of the significance of physical presence and body language on August 3, 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm at British Library, 23, Prestige Takt, Kasturba Road Cross.

The workshop will be facilitated by Emily Gray, Artistic Director - Trestle Theatre, UK. Emily has worked extensively in movement and devised storytelling theatre. She was previously the Artistic Director of TAG Theatre Company, a young people's touring theatre based in Glasgow.

All participants will receive one complimentary ticket to the British Council presented theatre production 'The Snow Queen', which tours Bangalore on August 21 and 22.
