The romance of the campaigning is over, the excitement of voting done with and the nail-biting suspense of the results announcement a thing of the past.
The new student council of Baldwin Women's Methodist College is firmly in place, and as the euphoria dies down, the girls are bracing themselves to tackle all the tasks that will soon be coming their way. All the excitement of the election process — especially so because it took place after six years in the college — culminated in a recently-held installation ceremony at the college hall.
The ceremony was largely a formal one; candles were lit and passed around and the choir sang a few soulful pieces. The new council turned up in pretty white saris with a touch of glitter on their pallus and Nikita E Manvani, the new president, gave a short speech regarding the role she'd be taking up in the college.
Apart from Nikita, the council comprises Shifa Konain, a second-year PUC student, as vice president; Shruti Gopinath, a third-year BCom student, as secretary; Kousthubha Palachanda, a second-year BCA student, as the sports secretary and a host of cultural secretaries including Hani Fasa, a third-year BBM student; Rebecca Ashwini Ronald, a second-year BBM student; Anushka A R, a first-year BCom student; Sukanya, a second-year PUC student and Maria Lesley, a first-year PUC student. While Divyani was voted as the hostel prefect, Shruti Gopinath doubled up as the dorm prefect.
The students were visibly nervous during the ceremony, but still managed to retain an expression of confidence. Nikita, who was clearly in her element, says, "I knew I would be the best choice, because I can manage these duties without letting my grades be affected.
But it was still a shock when I heard I'd won, because my opponent had quite a huge support group — there was barely a three-vote difference. But now that I have secured the position, I plan to bring about a change. Our college fests, 'Chrysalis' and Manthan will have a lot of new events and more publicity — and all the students know I'm very approachable."
Shifa was no less excited, saying, "My emotions were mixed when I heard about the result — I was happy, but there is a lot of responsibility, so a bit scared as well. I'm quite happy with our council this year. We get along well with each other, and make a good team."
As sports captain, Kousthubha has a lot to work on — but this is something that excites her. "Our college is big on sports, but there are some changes I would like to make: a bigger ground, perhaps, and increased participation in sports fest. I play basketball, and we have a great team — we just need to get out there more often!"
