It is believed that music is magical and can enrich souls. Illustrating this principle, S P Balasubramaniam took the stage recently at Sophia High School and his magnetic charisma was evident to the audience.
Kanasido Nanasido, as the concert was called, was held in aid of the cancer foundation, Sri Shankara Cancer Hospital.
The hospital's main objective is to bring down the base cost of cancer treatment, along with providing quality care to the patients.
"Singing is a routine — and the happiness is more when I sing for a purpose. I'm very grateful to be chosen over other singers to support this noble cause," expressed the legendary singer, Balasubramaniam.
It is not just his exceptional singing but the encouragement he gave to the young singers and musicians on stage that enthralled the audience and created an euphoric ambience.
The concert began with a beautiful rendition of an invocation song dedicated to Goddess Sharadha and moved on to the lighting of the lamp, which was symbolic of spreading knowledge to rekindle the flickering faith.
With a repertoire of over 40,000 songs in various languages, Balasubramaniam selected a handful of popular and mellow numbers for the concert — these were timeless melodies that are still considered to be favourites among people.
He started with a popular Kannada song Jotheyali Jothe Jotheyali and went on to sing Tamil, Telugu and Hindi songs.
He cheered the crowd with songs like Mere Rang Mein, Anjali Anjali Pushpanjali and Sathiya Tune Kya Kiya among other songs.
While the live orchestra was brilliant, other singers like Archana Udupa, Sunitha, Uday, Archana Ravi, Rajini and Srinivas added a special touch to the evening.
Other eminent guests who attended the event were Justice R V Raveendran,
from the Karnataka High Court; A Ravindra, advisor to the chief minister of
Karnataka; Jairaj, the former additional chief secretary of Karnataka; Anil Kumble, president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association; Sudha Murthy, trustee of Infosys Foundation; L Subramanyam, renowned violin exponent; MP Shyam, a well-known industrialist and philanthropist and Kush Desai, the director
of a popular cafe chain group.
On their part, the audience enthusiastically extended full support to promote
the cause by attending the concert.
"I'm an ardent fan of Balasubramaniam and never miss an opportunity to attend his concerts. This show was very special to me because I lost a friend who suffered from cancer. It's amazing how he has convinced so many people to become a part of this cause through his voice," said Nagaraj N, a member of the audience.
