Pushpagiri calling
The beautiful sculptures at Belur, Halebid are often enough to leave visitors spell-bound. The art and architecture of the place is world-renowned. However, not many are aware of Pushpagiri, a mere four km away from Halebid.
Pushpagiri is a charming hill, full of greenery. Historical records suggest that the Mallikarjuna temple here was built by Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana.
The pontiff of Pushpagiri Mutt Someshwara Shivacharya swamiji decided to spruce up the hill, which was earlier neglected. Today, it is full of flowering plants, and other flora. The hill attracts deer, peacocks and a wide variety of birds as well.
Also, the Mutt provides food and accommodation facilities to all those who visit the hill. What's more, many environment awareness campaigns are held here. Training on organic farming is also provided to those interested. The pontiff of the Mutt visits every home in every hamlet in the village and spreads the message of cleanliness, and conservation.
The Mutt has also installed biogas in the villages in the region. For those who wish to visit Pushpagiri, there are bus and autorickshaws plying regularly from Halebeedu. Free environment awareness programmes are also organised for schools, colleges and other institutions. There is a provision to conduct seminars and workshops as well.
