ice age4: Continental drift
English (U)
Cast: Voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Chris Wedge, others
Director: Steve Martino, Mike Thurmeier
The fourth installment of the popular franchise, shamelessly borrows ideas from the prequels, the result being that while the animation has improved, the story only got worse.
Continuing the story from Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Manny's daughter Peaches is now a rebel teen, who finds her father overbearing. In the meantime, Sid meets his annoying granny.
The continent starts breaking up, thanks to Scrat's (Wedge) obsession with an acorn, and Manny (Romano), Sid (Leguizamo), Diego (Leary) and Sid's granny get split from Manny's wife Ellie, Peaches and the rest of the family. What follows is how the friends reunite with Manny's family.
The characters from Ice Age 3 such as Rudy, Buck are replaced with Gutt, a giant ape who leads a band of pirates and Sid's granny. Gutt makes for a better villain than Rudy. Sid's granny is a surprise heroine and more bang for Buck. Diego finally gets a mate, a white tiger named Shira.
The only dark part are the sirens, lifted from Homer's Odyssey. The underwater animation and animated characters are notches above those in the prequels. Not so for the humour. Unlike Pixar (Disney) which manages to keep adults as engaged as kids with their flicks, Bluesky sadly fails in this aspect. It's time this franchise gets a burial.
Nevertheless, Continental Drift is great entertainment for the kids.
