Q I'm 22 years old and I have hard toenails. They do not crack nor are they discoloured. But they are difficult to clip. So this often leads to in-growth. This is not a new problem but it is troublesome because they come as hard as a rock. How can I soften them?
A Take half a bucket of warm water. Add coarse salt and pure almond oil into it and soak your feet in it for 15 minutes. This will help to soften your toe nails. Then cut the toe nails with a nail clipper. Toe nails should be cut straight across.
They should not be shaped into an oval shape, otherwise they can lead to in-growth. In other words, do not cut nails in a curved shape or round them off at the corners. After cutting them straight across, they may be filed with an emery board to smoothen them, but not to shape them. Apply cream and massage it on the nail and surrounding skin.
This will help to keep the nails soft. At night, before retiring to bed, apply a cream and massage it on the feet, nails and surrounding skin. Apply cream generously, wear cotton socks and go to sleep. You will see a noticeable difference in the texture of your toe nails.
