What's special about GI?
The GI tag ensures that none other than those registered as authorised users (or at least those residing inside the geographic territory) are allowed to use the popular product name. Darjeeling tea became the first GI tagged product in India in 2004-05.
Karnataka has many GI to its name, including art and crafts. But horticultural crops take the cake when it comes to the most number of GI tags in the State.
Among them are Nanjangudu rasabale (banana), oranges of Kodagu, betel leaves of Mysore, Mysore jasmine, Udupi jasmine, Hadagali jasmine, red banana of Kamalapura, red chakota of Devanahalli, appemidi (tender mango) of Sagar, Kodagu's green cardamom and matti gulla (endemic round brinjal) of Mattu near Udupi.
