Tamil (U/A)
Cast: Nani, Samantha, Sudeep, Abhiram, Crazy Mohan,
Santhanam
Director: S S Rajamouli
For once, the man with the Midas touch, Rajamouli, does not disappoint. For, Naan Ee (I am a fly) brilliantly lives up to the hype of its pre-release promos. Prodigious Magadheera-fame Rajamouli's ambitious and big-ticket gamble pays off as Naan Ee's superstar — an animated housefly — bowls one over. The Rs 40-crore bilingual flick justifies the time and money spent on its inventive visual effects which take your breath away. Indeed, Naan Ee is an example of Tamil commercial cinema makers pushing the envelope to not only entertain as also explore newer ways to effectively engage.
Such is the awesome antics of the proverbial housefly as it goes about putting the fear of death and devil in the villian, that you not only revel and rejoice in its pesky and pestering buzz, but cry for more of its revengeful pursuit than swat the life out of it. Take away the animated, avenging fly, Naan Ee falls flat in the triteness of its oft-churned-out plot — lover in reincarnation, here in the form of a fiery fly, to seek vengeance against the villian who cruelly murdered him, thwarting his youth and love.
Naan Ee is about a moneybag given to unscrupulous and philandering ways, who on setting his ravenous eyes on a miniature artist-social worker, brutally murders her besotted beau.
The lad, head over heels in love, is smitten by her despite her playing traunt with him. As the animated fly goes about its madcap with its singular purpose of punishing the evil perpetrator, Naan Ee turns into a visual extravaganza and a delightful entertaining experience.
Nothwithstanding its mundane plotline and minor aberrations aimed at the boxoffice, Naan Ee, given the ingenuity and honest intentions of Rajamouli, sees one savour the film like there is no tomorrow. For, every once a while comes a film that covets you completely.
Kudos to Rajamouli for staking his reputation and coming up trumps. Besides the overall technical finesse, musical embellishment and camera work, ensemble acting by Sudeep, Nani, Samantha, Santhanam and team make Naan Ee a wholesome movie worth its while and the wallet.
This fly is not the one you should swat or shoo away, but play ball with it as a pet with a purpose.
