Works of art from trash

When the authorities couldn't take immediate action to counter the garbage problem in the City, a group of creative third-year students from Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology decided to take matters into their own hands.

They collected waste material from inside their campus and completely transformed these items. The students have come up with artistic works from juice boxes, paper plates, cement bags, old newspapers and even pipes that they found thrown around. "In Bangalore, we find more garbage than grass these days. It should be cleared out as early as possible and the use of plastic must come down," says Abhishek Jogani, one of the students. "Being a designer, I wanted to spread the message of going green through my artistic works, which I create out of waste. This shows that anybody can get something fruitful out of the waste that they are thoughtlessly dumping," he adds.

Not only are these students contributing to keeping their surroundings clean and hygienic, but they're proving that one man's waste is actually another man's treasure. It is encouraging to note that the efforts of these students have not gone unnoticed. Even the principal of the college is on board with the initiative and has acknowledged their creativity. "Normally, students create artistic works from standard materials. But to see our students' artistic sensibility in using the campus waste as resource was brilliant. They showed the world that waste isn't waste and can be converted into useful and fashionable forms," expresses principal Devraj S.

The bunch of students have been urged by friends to give their initiative a name. But they have decided against this, since they don't see themselves as doing something unique that others can't. "Whatever you see in the world is useful and nothing should be considered waste. Different people look at artistic works in different ways.
Our message is very simple — the waste you throw away can be better used," explains Akash, who has been designing apparel with the waste materials. Interestingly, 'art from waste' will be included as a competitive event in the college's upcoming inter-college fest, Aristeia.
