Dear madam,

I have completed my Engineering in Information Science with an aggregate of 64% in 2012. My goal is to pursue MS in any country like US/UK/Germany/Italy/Australia. What kind ofscholarship facility is available in India to approach these countries? Please let me know the fee structure in these countries as well.

Maithri R G

Dear Maithri,

Some trusts or organizations offer financial assistance to Indian students who are planning to study abroad. The scholarships provided by these trusts are very course specific. Get in touch with the below mentioned institutes to confirm if you are eligible for the scholarship program offered by them. Mariwala Trust, Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships , KC Mahindra Scholarship, Nehru Trust for Cambridge University and Trinity College, Singapore International Airlines - Youth Scholarships, J N Tata Endowment, ITC Scholarships, Inlaks Foundation, Rhodes Scholarship, AMIDEAST, Fulbright Commission, The United Nations, World Health Organization.

Scholarship options are extremely competitive. So, also look for education loan options. Several banks offer loans to students to study abroad and each bank has its own terms and conditions (collateral security is generally a must). Fee structure varies in different institutions. You can get exact cost from the particular university where you are seeking admission. To give you an idea, an MS in USA may cost from $13,000 (Rs 7 Lakhs) a year at a state university and up to $35,000 (Rs 18.7 lakhs) for a private university. If you live on campus, as most students in North America do, you will probably have living expenses of $3,000 to $5,000 (Rs 1.6 - 2.6 lakhs) per annum in addition to your fees.

A masters degree in Australia might cost A$15,000 to A$36,000 a year (Rs 8-20 Lakhs).

Dear Madam,

I recently finished my mechanical engineering. I am planning to do my higher studies abroad. I am in a bit of a dilemma over whether I want to do an MS or an MBA could you please tell me the scope of both degrees. I would like do these courses in Europe, preferably in Germany. What is the scope of an MBA or MS degree completed in a reputed German institute? I have an academic score of about 69% only. Is this enough to fetch me admission into good university abroad?

A student

Dear student,

Yes, there is a possibility of you gaining an entry into a decent university, and it will mainly depend on your entry level exam scores and other requisites like SOP, recommendation letter, etc. You should base your decision of doing an MBA or MS to achieve knowledge and expertise in the field that you are interested in. It would be much better if you could decide based on your skills and strengths. Doing an MBA or MS abroad does not guarantee an executive position immediately. Other than German countries, UK, US, and Japan are also doing good in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Website www.daad.de will give you an insight into the best options for university, scholarships, subjects etc, in Germany. You may also please note that proficiency in German Language is a must in most universities in Germany. Living in the eastern part of Germany can be a little cheaper.

Dear Madam,

I have completed my MSc in Biotechnology from Bangalore University. I'm very interested in studying further, so I am considering doing MS in Biotechnology. Are MSc students eligible for MS courses abroad? Also, please guide me regarding the enterance exams I may need to clear for the same.

Gunashree

Dear Gunashree

You are eligible to do MS in Biotechnology, provided you meet the basic requisites like a minimum GPA followed by TOEFL, GRE (which many universities insist on), SOP, etc. For example, in the United States generally a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is a must. You need to firstly see if you have the eligibility criteria, then get a passport if you don't have one, and create a plan for studying abroad in the upcoming years. Explore different universities of your interest through websites such as www.studylink.com. Once you know their requirements, appear for GRE and TOEFL exams (websites www.ets.org/gre, www.toefl.org)

Dear madam,

I am starting my engineering in electrical and electronics but I am interested in physics. I would like to pursue masters in theoretical physics in one of the top 10 universities abroad like Caltech, MIT, or Stanford. I was informed that they mainly consider research experience other than GRE physics score. I would like to know how to gain research experience alongside my engineering. What other options do I have to study physics abroad in good universities?

A student

Dear student,

You have just entered Engineering course and now is the time to put in your best efforts to ensure learning and good grades, since your marks play a vital role in admission for higher studies. Having the ambition of getting into theoretical physics in good universities can always be researched and worked upon in terms of experience. It is not necessarily a change of lane, since many students study engineering and then go on to higher studies in subjects like physics. A bridge course to upgrade your learning in physics is an option in some universities, and of course even now you can explore any part-time or short-term courses that will enhance your knowledge. Study requirement needed to pursue Masters in theoretical Physics can be had directly from university websites www.hotcoursesabroad.com

After your degree, some undergraduate research experience in India will enhance your chances of admission in one of the top institutions that you are aiming for. Also keep in mind that IITs at Kharagpur and Kanpur, IISc, TIFR, and The Centre for Theoretical Physics in India also offer specialisation in Theoretical Physics.
