The department of commerce of Mount Carmel College recently hosted an inter-collegiate fest titled 'Cross Currents' on campus, where more than 15 colleges, participated in full strength.

Held under the theme of 'Appl-oid: It's an Apptastic world', the events were based on popular technological applications.

Each of the events was creatively titled as 'blood and glory', 'king's throne', 'talking tom' and 'fruit ninja'. Among the new events this year were 'corporate fashion show', 'turn court debate' and 'corporate jam' which were organised alongside popular events such as 'best manager', 'business quiz', 'mock stock' and 'portfolio management'.

The students believe that the fest always has events that are challenging and it is structured in such a way that it provokes the students to think beyond the curriculum and the classroom.

Dipti, general secretary of the student union, says, "The aim of the fest is to serve as an excellent base and launch pad, to give students exposure and provide a focussed learning process. It also encourages the students to have a holistic view, given the real-life situations and to enable them to think rationally and act wisely."

The events were also geared to promote entrepreneurship, teach them to learn to maximise their profits by investing wisely, as well as showing them what it takes to be a corporate employee. "Commerce fests might come across as boring for some people but it does well to test your intellect and your knowledge of the management world and the latest advances in technology," reasons Shubha, a second-year student of Kristu Jayanti College.

Priya Rajan, a first-year student from Christ University, feels that fests help one widen contacts. "There' so much exchange of information and ideas. You not only learn a lot but the atmosphere
automatically makes you more competitive," she says.

The fest was inaugurated by Prof Nandini Vaidyanathan, India's foremost strategist in crisis management. She spoke about technology which made the audience think and inspired them to break free from the routine.

Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain Evening College bagged the top slot, followed by Kristu Jayanti College which came second.
