Light plays an important role in one's life. Be it home, office or even the streets, lights not only help brighten up a dark place but at times, add aesthetic value to a building, in performing arts among other things. Keeping this in mind, as part of the 'Attakkalari India Biennial Festival 13', a two-day workshop on 'Light Design' by Horst Mohlberger from Germany was held recently.

The workshop saw around 22 people from different backgrounds, where light plays a crucial role, take part. Most of them said that until they attended the workshop, they had taken light design for granted. During the course of the workshop, Horst reintroduced them to light design, starting from the basics to overcoming the creative challenges of lighting the stage.

One saw people from theatre, architects, artistes and event management companies from all over the country at the workshop. It was the first time Tasneem, a theatre practioneer, attended such a workshop.

Though she has been dealing with lights and light design on a regular basis, she found the workshop very helpful.

"After attending this workshop, I realised there is so much more to learn from light than what we already know. It has been really helpful," she added.

Agrees Gurleen, another theatre practioneer, who said that light design really plays an important role, especially in all performing arts. "It not only adds to the aesthetics of the performance but also brings out the message clearly," she added.

Vasanth, a project manager for a Chennai-based theatre troupe called 'Evam', said that the workshop will help him build his knowledge about the technical part of light in theatre. "All this while, if there was any doubt, we would browse the internet and learn. But here, we got to deal with lights on a more personal level and had an insight into the history and creation of light design," he said.

Learning under Horst too was a different experience for many. The participants said that with his kind of knowledge, they could really get a different perspective of the field. Vijay, the production co-ordinator from Attakkalari, said that the workshop was an eye-opener and a good learning experience. "Horst takes a lot of his influence from architectural designs, which is a very different way of looking at light design. But having him in this forum was a wonderful experience," he summed up.
