K R Nagar beckons

A remote village which almost submerged some 80 years ago in the backwaters of Kannambadi Katte (KRS) then under construction, Yadathore, is now the more well-known Krishnaraja Nagara, a historic town. It is a taluk centre consisting of seven taluks, six hoblis and 31 gram panchayats in charge of about 180 villages.

To rehabilitate the residents of water-logged Yadathore, Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar chose the famed German architect, Krumbeigel, to build a township which was inaugurated in the year 1934. Yadathore became Krishnaraja Nagar named after the then king, Krishnaraja Wodeyar.

In and around K R Nagar, visitors get to see beautiful river spots like Chunchanakatte falls and Kappadi, apart from the ancient Arkeshwara and Kodanadarama temples. Located near the village of Dornahalli is the two-century-old church dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua.

About 15 km from K R Nagar is Chunchana Katte, a quiet village situated on the banks of the Cauvery, forming wonderful water falls next to a sacred spot called Dhanushkoti where Seeta is believed to have taken a holy dip.

According to mythology, this place was once a forest spot, sanctified by the short stay of Srirama and Seeta during their vanavasa. Chunchanakatte has a small but historic temple which is known to have been built during the reign of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar. The Dravidian-style temple has the presiding deity of Kodandarama with Seeta and Lakshmana.

The special poojas associated with the popular car festival of Chunchanakatte's Kodandarama temple are performed every year a day after the Sankranthi festival. The annual cattle fair, held here for two weeks in August, is one of the largest cattle fairs in the Mysore region.

On the outskirts of K R Nagar is an eye-catching temple which stands serenely on the banks of River Cauvery coursing through the town, called Arkeshwara temple.
