The department of fashion and apparel design of Garden City College recently hosted the 'GCC Travel Puraskar Awards', which had winners from across 21 categories.
Choosing the awardees wasn't an easy task. The 'Best Online Travel Agent' went to 'makemytrip.com'. 'Spark Adventures' won the award for 'Best Adventure Tours'. The award for 'Best Tour Operator — Outbound' went to 'Thomas Cook'. The 'Best Operator in Medical Tourism' award was bagged by 'The Globetrotters'.
Jadhav, additional chief secretary, Department of Tourism, Government of Karnataka, says, "If India lives up to the adage atithi devo bhava, the tourism Industry will only prosper and flourish." Joseph V G, chairman of the Garden City Group of Institutions, observes, "Tourism is getting bigger by the day. It is one of the most promising industries today and is opening up many vistas for all those who wish to make a career in this area."
The other guests for the evening were K Sreedhar, general manager - transport, KSTDC, Bangalore; Anil Kumar, chairman, TAAI - Karnataka Chapter and M Muthu, general manager (CIC/ATM) - Airports Authority of India.
Among the other awardees were 'Body Craft', which won the award for the best wellness centre and the award for the best emerging travel agency went to 'Indus Outback Ventures'. The last two categories saw no nominations, but the clear-cut winners were Rahul Devnath for 'Best Tourism Promotion on Wheels' and Rafiq Hussain for the 'Best Travel Personality'. Rahul Devnath, also an alumni of Garden City College, says, "I am ecstatic to be back in my college, only to be honoured. It feels great to have won this."
The students of the college were thrilled and say that not only were they proud that such a prestigious award ceremony was being hosted in their institution, but the exposure they got through the event was unparalleled. Neetha, a student, says, "We got to see the best of those from the tourism industry and it was a privilege for us to interact with them. We got a feel of the real thing."
