Playtonik Productions presented the English comedy 'Rumors' at Ranga Shankara recently. The play has some comical characters, a house, a gun, the cops — all determined to make a big mess.
Set in New York, this farcical play also sees the actors in their best comic timing. Three couples arrive at the town house of the deputy mayor of New York City to celebrate his 10th wedding anniversary.
However, they soon discover that his wife is missing from the party, the servants are gone and the deputy mayor has been shot. A mad cover-up follows and that keeps getting more and more complicated.
The cops arrive at the town house as they smell something suspicious, and two of the characters, Charlie and Lenne, are put in a tough spot. Since Charlie is not in a position to face the cops, Lenne, disguises himself as Charlie and successfully narrates a false version of the accident, which the cops fall for.
Written by American playwright Neil Simon, 'Rumors' offered a fun-filled evening for the theater lovers in the City. A 90-minute play, it was directed by Tulika Majumdar.
The cast included Salome Inamdar, Vaisakh Shankar, Roli Arun, Jimmy Xavier, Prashant Nair, Deeban Chakravarthy and Shwetha Daga. Jimmy Xavier thanked the audience for giving a standing ovation at the end of the play. He played the character Lenne who panicks all the time for petty things.
"I am very different from the character that I played. Given any situation, I am a cool-headed guy, who does not panic and always tries to figure out something," he said. A freelance theatre artiste, Jimmy started his acting career in the year 1998. "I have always loved performing," he said. Prashanth Nair said be it a big or a small role, he always finds a way to improve.
"Playtonik gave me a chance to improvise. As an actor, you have to improvise in such a way that the story moves forward," he said. Prashant belongs to a theatre group called 'Tahatjo'. He likes to work with different directors and theatre groups.
"Apart from acting in plays, I handle the marketing and technology department for an IT company," he said.
