The 'Orion Wine Festival 2013', the first lakeside wine event in the City, to be held in association with the Karnataka Wine Board, was announced at the Orion Mall, where a grape-stomping session was also conducted to kick off the festivities.

A one-of-a-kind festival, it will showcase the best of Indian and specifically, Karnataka's wine heritage and offer wine lovers some of the best wines for sampling.
Wineries like Big Banyan, Sula, Black Buck, Grover, Heritage, Alpine and Fratelli among others will be putting up stalls and showcasing their best wines. Hosted by Mark Rego, it will take place from January 18 to 20 at the mall, where wine connoisseurs can indulge in the classiest of wines while learning about pairing various foods with each wine.

Not only will it be a wine-and-cheese affair, but there will also be other carnival style entertainment with grape stomping, magicians, flash mobs, fire-eaters, live music, beat boxing, stilt walkers, magicians, vintage cars and bike displays,
among others.

During the inauguration, Vishal Mirchandani, CEO of Brigade Group, says, "We, at Orion Mall, are always looking at providing enriching lifestyle experiences to our consumers. The target is to showcase the rich wealth of the wine industry of Karnataka and popularise the wine culture." He adds, "This is a big chance for Karnataka to extend its name beyond the IT industry and allow the wine industry to flourish."

Suresh Chandra, managing director, Karnataka Wine Board, was also present. "Karnataka is the second state leading in wine production after Maharashtra — we make around 35 lakh litres of wine a year. But the consumption is hardly 10 ml per person annually. In places like France, they have up to 50 to 60 litres a year individually," he notes.

The wine tourism aspect will also be given a focus at the festival. "Through the festival, we want to create awareness about wine tourism in the State," says P L Venkaratamareddy, the managing director of Heritage Grape Winery. "People need to understand wine in the right context," he adds. Tickets for the festival can be bought at www.bookmyshow.com
