Management is not memorisation

It is prerequisite for business schools to meet global standards. B-schools have to continuously endeavor to create an atmosphere where the students can learn, explore and grow into well groom leaders for tomorrow who can think beyond the reach of today and take challenges of growing neck to neck and cut- throat competitions and overcome uncertainty of corporate world.

B-schools must understand skills desired by organization first then must merge structured training sessions, workshop where the real world problem of specialized field must be given to solve, separate regular workshops must be organized for different specializations and must be part of curriculum.

Focus should be on skill development along with personality traits, work should be done towards other aspects which are important to be profit center and real asset of the organization like visualizing the situations, determination towards accomplishing tasks team building abilities, strong decision making, taking initiatives, desire for acquiring more and more knowledge about the systems, industry and the area they work in.

Are lectures (monologues or dialogues) coupled with case studies, interactive sessions, workshops, seminar and presentation the most ideal form of teaching? This is the traditional method followed across most institution.

Some have innovated by adding guest faculty from different industry, who give a first-hand experience of the happenings in the corporate world, so the students can remain updated of the recent developments and trends followed in a particular industry or organization.

Let us examine traditional methods followed by most of the B-school in short-listing the students for management education.

The objective oriented written exam, followed by Group Discussions and Personal Interviews. Many leading B-Schools have innovated and incorporated factors of psychological performance through innovative management games and response tests for judging the students true outlook for pursuing management education.

B-schools create leaders revolutionary thinkers in the business world but have not been thinking and taking any innovative steps as far as their own brand building is concerned until now. The wish list that one might want from B-schools may be endless. But as a benchmark B-schools should strive to provide an infrastructure that will incorporate the state-of-art facilities aimed at strengthening the conceptual, technical and human skills of the managers that emerge from the institute.

The overall setup should be futuristic with features of intelligence building that will cumulative effect of technology with knowledge partners (faculties from India and Abroad) from across the globe. Thanks to rapid progress of technology for this will be a systems driven setup in the age of digital era. These facilities should include plug and play classroom equipped with videoconferencing, Centre for Global Networking, e-center and entrepreneurship guidance cell; Hi- tech management development center; case study discussion hall, state of art CD ROM based library and the like.

Before the students join the institute, along with the parent and the pears they tend to be the customer once the students join the institutes he is still the institutes' customer as there is an input of knowledge on this raw material.

This raw material gets processed to emerge as a product and at this stage; the prospective employer is the customer of the institute. But the institute still continues to be the product as it acts as the production unit with experts in the respective fields of imparting knowledge. One has to continue aiming at the target and striking for right.


The objective of B-schools is to produce managers for business world ingredient with strong leadership qualities, who can truly prove to be ……… Centre for the organization they serve.
