We live in a time when provisions like Skype and FaceTime allow people of different continents to be a part of each others' lives with the click of a button.
Keeping this trend in mind, Metrolife speaks to students in the City to understand whether keeping in touch with family plays an important role in their life or not.
For those who are not from Bangalore, the need to stay connected can be quite excessive, simply because it is a new place to adjust to.
"You are born a kid who would like to be fed and asked a billion questions all the time. But the truth is that only when you leave home do you realise its value. I need to keep in touch with my parents, but some sort of independence has kept me from making
calls too often. A phone call once in two days does the trick for me. But I try and take a bus back home once in two months," informs Aishvarya Varma, a student of Christ University.
While many students cannot afford to frequently make a trip home every now and then, it is a very convenient setup for those who live with family here.
While they have a home to come back to and a roof over their head, there are always hangouts in the City to enjoy with friends.
"I'm from Bangalore itself and after college, I like to go back home and spend time at home. There are no restrictions on me hanging out with friends. So, keeping in touch with family members has and probably won't become an issue while I'm studying," notes Heena Lodha, a student of CB Bhandari Jain College.
While the girls seem to have their emotional attachments, the boys are no different
either.
"It's very important to keep in touch with our parents as they need our emotional support to keep them going and so do we. As we are growing up, little do we realise that they too are growing old. In such situations, it's extremely important to take responsibility to ensure their well being," says Naseer, a student of CMRIT, who keeps in touch via the phone. "They are an integral part of our life and we have to make time to ensure that they always remain so," he adds.
There are some who use technology and have video chats, some who need their daily phone calls and perhaps a few out there who still write letters home. Regardless of the mode of communication, it's safe to say that for students in Bangalore, both from here and outside, the need to stay updated on their family's whereabouts still matters, which is what counts.
