Running that extra mile

While most people love a pleasant walk, running a marathon is a different experience. Yet, many people across the City are seriously taking to this form of exercise — whether it's to make a point or simply get a workout.

Metrolife speaks to a few Bangaloreans to find out how this trend is catching on in the City.

Bobby Thomas, a regular marathon runner and a global capability development manager, says, "I've been running for four years and am a regular at marathons. What keeps me interested in them is that they make one compete with oneself and extract the best out of oneself. They test your physique and strength. Also, the need to be with friends is another big reason."

He adds, "Marathons require dedication and we train a lot for them. Creating new personal records are what keep me going — this motivates me to perform better."
A barefoot runner, Bobby has planned to run for a cause every year.

Dileepan M S, the owner of an advertising firm and also a regular runner, adds, "From the Mumbai marathon to the Ultra that we just ran in the City, I've been involved with many marathons. I run with my wife. Since my business is near my house, I have plenty of time and wanted to do something motivational. I became a passionate runner just for the 'high — and now, it is a major part of my life."

He adds excitedly, "My wife and I have been able to bring quite a few people into the running community. Running with a group of people — both younger and older than me — keeps me motivated and on the right track."

Brojen Singh Nongmaithem, a manager at a firm, says, "Most of us run marathons for the motivation it gives us. In our busy schedules, we don't have many kicks in life. This also gives us a chance to meet new people and know about life beyond work."
Others, though, aren't so taken in by the thought of running a marathon.

Sara Elsa Dan, a college student, says, "I see large hoardings and pamphlets of marathons all across the City. But taking part in a marathon means a lot of effort in terms of training and practice — and I don't have the time for that."

Subhasis Chakrapani, a software engineer, adds, "I work for an IT company, which often gets involved with such marathons. But none of my colleagues are very passionate about it. They often take part in it, out of the pressure from the organisation's end or to be a part of the group. I don't really take part in such events, though," he concludes.
