Being fashionable is not just about what you wear or how you carry yourself, it's also about being a trend-setter and flaunting different styles.
Despite the presence of several branded stores in the City, many fashionistas say it's not just the brands that create fashion but those who wear something different.
At the end of the day, it all boils down to your style — whether your clothes are from a mall or a street-side plaza.
"The clothes that you get in the plazas are actually classy and trendy. My friends and I buy them because they make a style statement," says Monisha Raj, a student of Mount Carmel College.
Tibetan Plaza, Arihant Plaza and Commercial Plaza are a few places in the City that offer clothes and accessories, including belts and bags, which are trend-setters. Considering the fact that girls don't like to repeat their clothes very often, these shops are a haven for them. They get a variety of clothes here at reasonable prices.
Poorvi Jain, a student who loves street shopping, says, "Tibetan Plaza is best for shoes. I can get a variety of clothes from these plazas than from a branded store."
Shraddha Dhola, a shopper, thinks these markets actually offer high-street fashion.
"The clothes sold in these plazas are similar to what you see on television. It's great to find all of that under one roof," she says. The goods at Tibetan Plaza are mostly procured from Bangkok and Kolkata, while the other plazas in the City get their items from Mumbai and Delhi.
It's been 10 years since 'Vicky's', a clothing shop in Arihant Plaza, was set up. Each person has a different choice.
"I find out from my customers what they prefer for the next season and bring in the stock accordingly," says Nihal Singh Hanspal, the owner of 'Vicky's'. Tenzin, the owner of a shop in Tibetan Plaza, cheerfully says that most young people prefer shopping at his store.
"The clothes in Tibetan Plaza and Arihant Plaza are very fashionable. They always have the latest styles. I think the brands even copy them," says Vinitha G, a college student.
The plazas offer a wide choice not just for shopaholics. They also give innovative ideas for young designers. Rucha, one such designer, says, "We collect samples from Tibetan Plaza for a lesser price. The colourful variety displayed here is something that drives the latest street trend."
Fabiha, who visits Tibetan Plaza to check the recent trends, has her own line of clothing. She says that Tibetan Plaza is a great place for women who like to go for Western wear.
"Although the fabric is not that good, it's nice that high fashion comes from these markets. These markets inspire me to come out with diverse styles for my line," she confesses.
