The issue of foreign direct investment has been a hot topic for a while now, especially among the City's student community.

There has been no dearth of on-campus discussions on the pros and cons of the initiative, its possible repercussions and the section of society it will most directly impact — and it was to provide a well-organised platform for these thoughts and opinions that Symbiosis Institute of Business Management recently hosted 'The Big Fight 2012'.

This was a debate competition, which gave interested students a space to express their views and prove their mettle in a competitive environment.

The topic of the discussion was restricted to 'Logjam on FDI'. The purpose of the debate went beyond just airing opinions, though.

Through discussing the possible repercussions of this initiative, the students hoped to find a solution to the current atmosphere of uncertainity. The students brought out all the analysis in a very detailed manner.

For starters, they discussed why the government is so keen to get foreign direct investment, as well as why the opposition was adamant on not letting the bill be passed.
The moderators of the event — Sayali Warade and Rohit Tanaje — structured the debate in an effective manner, bringing out each scenario and its effects on the common man.
Anand Bhate, a student of the college, who participated in the discussion, feels that this programme went beyond a mere competitive event.

"More than a debate or a controversial talk, the event was an insight into the much-talked-about FDI issue. Discussions were held above the political beliefs and conceived perceptions," he says.

He feels that the programme also went a long way in educating the students about the pros and cons of foreign direct investment.

"Positives like development of the nation, progress and better-quality products by FDI inflow were discussed. Overall, this initiative by the college enhanced our knowledge and broadened our perspectives," he adds.

After an hour of debate, Aravindan — the judge for the debate, who happens to be a well-known name in the area of international business — declared the winners. Tanuj Agarwalla came first for his succinct and detailed analysis, while Harshit Shukla and Srisha Kadambi were the runners up.
