The last few days, the weather in the City has been pretty frustrating — ranging from chilly nights and occasional misty mornings to uncomfortably warm days. Predictably, the fact that it's sometimes warm has encouraged a lot of Bangaloreans to discard of their sweaters and jackets.
On an average, the temperature is about five degrees higher than what it usually is at this time of the year. But because of the unpredictability of the weather, different ailments have also been spreading across the City.
Doctors say that the most common of these are respiratory diseases and add that because of the cold, people who suffer from arthritis and joint pain are definitely having a bad time of it.
As Dr Dayananda, a physician, explains, it's important that people remain cautious about their health during this time of the year.
"We've definitely seen an increase in respiratory infections and because of the cold, viral infections are also spreading. Interestingly, many doctors have also noticed a rise in the cases of gastro-intestinal infections. This is partly because people tend to eat out a lot during this season and partly because food doesn't always stay good in this weather."
A few simple precautions, he adds, can go a long way in keeping different ailments at bay. "Make it a point to eat and drink healthy — hygienically-cooked food and lukewarm water should do the trick. It's also important to keep warm because infections spread more easily when one is cold," he says, adding, "Those who suffer from allergies should stay indoors on chill mornings and avoid drinking cold liquids. If someone develops a mild cold or fever, it's best to take immediate steps to treat it," he adds.
Sheela, a human-resource manager, agrees that this sort of weather can be annoying. "It was cold for a while and then suddenly, we see a really warm day. The company I work with has circulated an e-mail to all the employees, with tips on avoiding sickness and the best things to eat during this time. We've encouraged them to ask their families to follow these guidelines as well. On a personal level, of course, I avoid eating out and stick to bottled water," she says.
Abdul, a professional, feels that because of the occasional sunny days, Bangaloreans have become careless about staying warm.
"That's a big mistake. It's easiest to fall sick during this sort of unpredictable weather. It's best to err on the side of caution," he observes.
Since he's prone to throat infections, he makes it a point to do what he can to avoid developing one.
"I take a thermos of lemon tea with me to work and sip it every few hours. Little things like this can go a long way in staying healthy," he sums up.
