private taxis are only adding to it. There used to be a time when hiring taxis was considered to be an expensive affair. Now, every second car on the street is a private taxi.

Although initially, it was the corporate houses which hired taxis to ferry their employees to work and home, other Bangaloreans too are finding taxis handy now, especially those going to the airport, for late-night parties and to attend events that are held far away from the City.
Arun, a professional, says he regularly calls for a taxi when he goes partying at night.
"With police strictly checking motorists for drinking and driving, hiring a taxi becomes convenient. Now, I don't need to worry too much about the travelling part," he adds.
Most women, however, think twice before hiring a taxi. One of the reasons cited by many is the safety factor. "With so many taxi services, one doesn't know which one to trust. There are only a few that have GPS to monitor the movement of the taxi etc. I generally hire those," says Priyanka, a professional.
For Poorna, a student, buses have always been a safer option but in the nights, she always takes a taxi. "During the nights, I prefer to use a taxi from a legitimate company, which screens its drivers," she adds.
But not all Bangaloreans say that they prefer this mode of transport. Shruti, an HR executive, however, thinks otherwise. Her preference is either air-conditioned buses or autos. Taxis come last in her list.
"I feel the safest way is to use government Volvo buses. Taxi is the last choice as one is confined in a closed car with a stranger. There are too many cabs in the City. This coupled with the unruly driving make me nervous to use these. So I think twice before hiring a taxi," she sums up.
