Chapped lips can be ugly and painful — but the problem is that in this weather, it's very difficult to avoid them. Cold and brisk winds contribute to drying out and chapping lips. In extreme cases, they can even begin to bleed. Here are a few ways in which you can ensure that your lips stay healthy and hydrated this winter.

— Apply honey on your lips and then add a coat of petroleum jelly. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then remove it with a damp swab of cotton.

* Rub your lips with a slice of cucumber.
* Soak rose petals in milk for a few hours, mash them into a paste and apply this to your lips.
* Buff your lips with a mixture of olive oil and sugar.
* Coconut oil is also a great way to treat dry lips
* Use a thick product, like shea butter, every night before sleeping.
* Use a heavy product like petroleum jelly every night. It also helps prevent blisters that are sometimes caused by stepping out in the sun.
* Avoid citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, because they contribute to dry lips.
* Drink lots of water to ensure your entire body is hydrated.
* Certain kinds of lipsticks can dry out lips. Find out what suits you best.
* Don't bite or pick at your lips as this simply makes it worse.
* You can also try applying a cool, wet cloth to your lips, and then apply lip-balm to lock the moisture in.
