Dear Sir,

I am pursuing 1st year diploma in Special Education. In that I have chosen Cerebral Palsy as my subject. We had many choices, say Autism, Cerebral Palsy, learning disabilities. I am doing diploma in Cerebral Palsy. Now, one of my senior collegemates told that I should have chosen Autism. But now I think it is too late, I can't change now. And I am worried now that did I make a wrong choice. Please advice me how to go about.

Dear student,

First of all, hearty congratulations for having chosen such a meaningful field and for committing yourself to children with special needs. You will find your career very meaningful. Once you enter into the field of special education, you can go on adding skills and qualifications, and gaining practical experience. There is great need and scope in development of spastic children (with cerebral palsy), and you will find the work quite satisfying. Later you can also add to your expertise in autism, learning disabilities, Down's syndrome, mental retardation, or even multiple disabilities as you go along, since most institutions work with children with different challenges. You have certainly not made a wrong choice - get fully involved in your course and your vocation.

Dear Sir,

I am in the second year of B Sc (Chemistry, Botany, Zoology) degree course. I would like to pursue an M.Sc degree in Chemistry or Biotechnology in an Indian university. Which are the entrance exams that i am supposed to appear for? which are the Universities, for which I need to apply separately? I also want to know about the job opportunities after the M Sc course.

Dear Friend,

Since you have been studying science subjects over many years, first make a decision whether you would like to make your future in chemistry or in biotechnology (and if it is the latter, whether you prefer genetics, microbiology, biochemistry etc). Also decide whether you would like to be in the field of research, training, teaching, product development, quality control, manufacturing, marketing or management. Accordingly, you should choose the post-graduation course. If you are deeply interested in pure sciences and have been a brilliant student, you should aim for a national level institute. For post-graduation in the most reputed institutions like IISc, IITs, BITS Pilani and IISER among others. You have to appear for their respective entrance exams. Other colleges mostly give admission based on your marks in B Sc.

Dear Sir,

I would like to ask your guidance & advice for my daughter who is in Xth in CBSE in a private school. She is naturally talented, interested in studies and she is very good specially in Maths & Science etc. But because of my economical condition/crisis I would like to enquire about financial assistance either from govt. or private or scholarships available for further education (XI th onwards) with minimum percentage or basic qualifications for availing it with add.,ph.no.of the institutes/organizations etc. As she is my only child, is there any govt schemes for girls education? I request you to please guide us & oblige.
Suresh

Dear Suresh,

It is commendable that you wish to give a good higher education to your daughter. If she performs well in her 10th standard Board exams, she can seek admission in +2 and apply to various philanthropic institutions to get at least part reimbursement of her fees, cost of text books etc. Among the various organizations that give scholarships, a few are listed below: Hemavathi Memorial Trust, No 21, 5th Cross, Kumarapark West; Kadur S P Charitable Trust 90, 34th Cross, 9th Mn, 4th Blk, Jayanagar; Inlaks Foundation, www.inlaksfoundation.org, Jindal Trust, Jindal Nagar, Tumkur Road, Bangalore-73; Mahila Dakshata Samiti, 66A, Sanjaynagar Mn Rd, Geddalahalli; Prerana Trust phone: 51252263

Dear Sir,

I have completed my B E degree in Instrumentation Technology with 70% aggregate now I want to write IES exams. Am I eligible to apply for the same and where will I get study material for the same.
Mahesh Reddy

Dear Mahesh

Indian Engineering Service (IES) is an All-India service like IAS that selects qualified engineers from various branches from any recognized Indian university. You are then posted in any of the Central Government departments as a Class I officer and have to serve all over the country.

Details are available from the website upsc.gov.in. Study material and past question papers are available in major cities in bookshops that sell books for competitive exams like Avenue Road in Bangalore. Coaching is available only from a selected few institutions unlike IAS and other competitive but other than technical questions, you can benefit from learning general knowledge, current affairs and communications which is necessary for the IAS and allied services exam.

Dear Sir,

As I am a student of 12th standard, I am in a confusing stage as to what to do after my 12th. My course is BASC (Business, Accountancy, Statistics, Computer Science). But I am bit weak in computer science and in programs too. My parents suggest that I do BBM. Is it a good option or can you suggest some good courses which I can take up as a career option? And also suggest me some good colleges in Bangalore, where I can take BBM.
A student

Dear student,

It is good that you have identified your strengths and weaknesses, and are exploring what career would suit you most. Yes, BBM would be a good option for you. Selection of college would depend on your marks and performance in individual entrance exams. You may choose based on whether you are looking for strong academics (Christ, Joseph's, MES, Christu Jayanthi, Seshadripuram,) or greater exposure to corporate world and add-on courses (Jain, Sindhi, CMR, Alliance).
