She has been in Bollywood only for four years but has already made quite a name for herself.

With films like Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Band Baaja Baaraat and Jab Tak Hai Jaan to her credit, Anushka Sharma seems to be on the right track. Metrolife spoke to the actress on her recent visit to the City to promote her upcoming film, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, opposite Imran Khan.

For the rom-com, the actress seems to have taken up a rather bold character, which should be an interesting avatar to see her in. She shares, "When I started working on Bijlee (her character's name), I realised that there were many layers to her. However bold she may be, she doesn't get deterred by logic that prevails in the world; it's her own logic that she goes by. In spite of that, she's extremely vulnerable. There's a lot of contradictions in her, which is why the role excited me."

How was it working under the able direction of the man who has given Bollywood films like Maqbool, Omkara and Kaminey, to name a few? "He is a very unique director in the way he works," starts off Anushka.

"I always thought that when you walk on to a film set, there's already a frame decided. But it wasn't like that in the film. In the scene where I run to Imran and say shaadi kar le mujh se (marry me) and he says hat, we were improvising a lot. That very dialogue wasn't even in the script. That he allowed us to do that was very exciting," she reveals, adding, "I respect him because he always creates characters that have some dum (strength) in them. Even a small character has a beginning and an end."

In the film trailer, Bijlee is accused of having something called the 'Meena Kumari complex'. When an explanation was sought, the actress laughs and shares, "The 'Meena Kumari complex' is when someone is only happy in sadness. Even if your life is completely fine and all's good, you create drama and sadness.

In the film, Matru tells me that I have this complex because I appear to be happy on the outside but I actually have no idea what the hell I'm doing!"While the world sees her as a constantly chirpy and bubbly person, acting, she says, is the only thing that keeps her grounded. "I think for me, being on set is the ultimate thing — you're cut off from everything.

That's the only time when you feel like no one's watching; no one's talking to you like Anushka Sharma. It's the most amount of time I get with myself," she notes.
What is going to keep her busy in 2013? "After this film's released, I'm working in Rajkumar Hirani's Peekay and then in Anurag Kashyap's period film, 'Bombay Velvet'," wraps up the 24-year-old.
