Kala Sammelana, a handicrafts exhibition, which has more than 50 stalls from all over the country, provides Bangaloreans with an opportunity to splurge on the best handicraft products available. Artisans from states like Gujarat, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have put their products on display at the exhibition at Safina Plaza. The exhibition will be on till January 6.

Amit Singh, one of the artisans who has put up a stall, says that he has had a lukewarm response so far and is waiting for sales to pick up. "I am selling wooden toys and other items from Channapatnam. I have toys, wooden bangles and bracelets. The prices are easy on the pocket and I cannot understand why the sale is so poor. We have put up our stalls earlier and had got a very good response from Bangaloreans. We are hopeful that the situation changes in the coming few days," he adds.

Mohammed Hanif, who is exhibiting antique jewelery from Kashmir, has a beautiful range of items. "The items are made in an antique style. These are mostly pieces of brass jewelery, embedded with stones. People like them as they have a classic appeal," he says. Tribal jewellery from Orissa was quite a hit among the people who were visiting the exhibition. Many could be seen crowding around a stall, taking a look at it. Some stalls also had home decor items, such as patachitra paintings and dokra wall-hangings.

Tanushree, who was one of the visitors at the exhibition, says that such initiatives are a good way to promote Indian handicrafts in big cities. "In cities like Bangalore, people generally prefer to buy things from malls. But thanks to exhibitions like these, we get to interact with the artisans and buy authentic exhibits," she explains.

The famous marble and stone inlay work from Agra was another crowd-puller at the exhibition. "We have exhibited stone inlay work from Agra as well as blow-work on glass. Many items like lampshades, boxes and candle stands are also available. This is not the first time that we have displayed our products in Bangalore. People here like our work and encourage us to come every year," notes Dorilal, the owner of the stall.
