Christmas
Micheal Buble
EMI, Rs 395
Xmas special
Michael Buble's first full-length Christmas album is a well-crafted collection of many much-loved Christmas hits sung in swinging contemporary pop style.
Buble's version of Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, is stripped off its Motown influences and replaced with a traditional, keyboard-based pop ballad treatment and it is equally good with a lot of emotional intensity. The all-time popular Silent Night showcases Buble's beautiful vocal delivery. He is backed by a Libera-lite children's choir.
On the guest list is the English-Italian trio, Puppini Sisters, who do a swinging version of Jingle Bells almost matching the Bing Crosby version from 1943. The second guest artiste, Shania Twain, does a duet with Michael Buble on White Christmas.
Incidentally, both the pop stars are Canadian. The third guest artiste, Thalia, Mexican singer and actor, joins Buble to deliver the grand finale, Feliz Navidad. The duo give a Spanish touch to the song.
Santa Baby is his cheeky gender twist version of Santa Buddy, originally sung by Eartha Kitt and made famous by Madonna. Cold December Night is the only original song in the album and has the characteristics of a classic (Each year, I ask for many different things/ but now I know what my heart wants you to bring./So please just fall in love with me this Christmas.)
He renders Phil Spector's version of Christmas (Baby please come home) and Franz Schubert's version of Ave Maria.
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town is a big band version of the popular song. Blue Christmas is an Elvis-influenced track backed by a New Orleans-type of band. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas has a light-hearted approach with a jazzy style.
The special edition bonus tracks include Winter wonderland, Frosty the snowman and Silver Bells featuring Naturally 7, an American music group of seven males with a distinct cappella style they call 'Vocal Play.'
